Women’s conference calls for female participation in Sudan peace process

September 12, 2024 (KAMPALA) – A women’s conference in Uganda’s capital has called for sustained pressure to end Sudan’s conflict and ensure women’s full participation in any peace process and future political arrangements.

The Guardians Organization organized the conference, “Towards a Joint Feminist Agenda for Peace and Restoring the Path of the December Revolution,” which brought together 100 women this week.

Participants agreed on the urgent need for a ceasefire, safe corridors for civilians, and humanitarian aid that meets women’s specific needs, the Guardians Organization said in a statement on Thursday.

They also called for a peace process that respects human rights and women’s rights and guarantees their fair representation in any political transition.

The conference demanded accountability for crimes and violations committed during the conflict, particularly those targeting women.

Women have been disproportionately affected by the fighting, facing displacement, economic hardship, and sexual violence.

Hadia Hasaballah, the Guardians Organization chairperson, said women from Egypt, Ethiopia, and Chad could not attend the conference in person but participated online.
