Sudan SPLM to hold Obama victory celebration mid-November

November 7, 2008 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) announced today that it will hold an event in Khartoum next week to celebrate US Senator Barack Obama’s victory in the presidential elections.

The SPLM said in a statement reported by the daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat published in London that Sudan needs to celebrate it “because we are in desperate need for historical reconciliations that were established by the US elections”.

“The celebration is held under the theme ‘Enforcing equal citizenship rights and respecting diversity’” the SPLM further said.

Obama’s landslide win of this week’s long awaited elections sent jubilant people all around the world celebrating the rise of a minority to lead the most powerful country in the world. For many it was the impressive success story for the son of a Kenyan man who was a foreign student in Hawaii.

The Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said that the election of Obama is “the beginning of victory for black people”.

The SPLM claimed in the statement that Obama “is a descendant of the ‘Alluwa’ people who live on the banks of the Nile in Sudan and East Africa”.

The Southern movement has been founded with an ideology of the ‘New Sudan’ aiming at creating a country based on equal rights for its citizens including minorities.

The 2005 peace agreement brokered by the US and other western countries ended two decades of civil war between the Arab and Muslim-dominated north and the mainly Christian and animist black southerners.

The SPLM and the National Congress Party (NCP) are the two main partners of Sudan’s national unity government.

In 2011, southerners will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether they want to be independent or remain part of Sudan. A census is supposed to prelude the elections but has stalled because of cash shortage and disagreement over the process

Celebration of a democractic victory by SPLM and its leadership who shamlessly reinstated a democratically defeated Taban Deng Gai as a governor of Western Upper Nile State, forcefully imposed Daniel Awet Akot and corrupt Malong Awan as governors in Greater Bahr El Gazel region plus countless rogue commissioners through out South Sudan is laugble. Kiir & company need to come clean, open minded and receptive to new ideas instead of celebrating victories which came as a result of pure democracy and transparency which they are denying to their own people is itself an insult to people of South Sudan.

    Shame on SPLM

God bless SPLA and people of South Sudan

Dear Southerners, Let us learnt to be economical on how to use our resources rather than wasting them. The fact that money are going to be use on Obama victory celebration has no sense to me while milions of S.sudanese are suffering in one way or the other,It was better if the money would have been use on the development of southern Sudan.Mind you,Iam not against Obama nor iam against the SPLm but the Letter send to him by HE Salva Kiir Mayaardit was enough to convince him that we are behind.SPLM should stop wasting public fund.

I Know We all are very happy because Black is there as President in the oval House. But the question is, could that Black serve us? Or we wash our Money for no benefit. Historically is something can not be forgotten that Blackman ever since never hold or come near to that Position. O.k, O.k,Celebrate, and latter we see if his Administration will do good thing to us or the whole Africa.

I appreciate the effort taken by the SPLM to organise the celebration of Obama success as US president.

His success as the US president will contribute to the attainment of the peace and stability in Sudan. So hurry and glue all deals possible to deliver stability in Sudan.

Dear Southerns what happwned in the American history wae something that they fought for a long time. It was the vission set forth and left to generation to come by Martine Luther King Jr. we have realized that it is being fullfilled in Obama election to Presidency. Sure, it is unblievable but it happened for those are still doubting.

The question is are we now celebrating Barack’s victory with an idea of cessetion in the mind or with The idea of the cellar united Sudan under the theme ”New Sudan” the vission set forth and left to us by our late leader Dr Garang and many idviduals who have died for that course? Let think twice.

Resorting to cessesion is the sign of defeat which says we as Southerners or indiginous Africans can’t rule Arabs. That notion is totally wrong and should be decourage. Let us learn from what happened in America today. If they made it to the mountain top,(the Blacks) why not us in the Sudan? Let’s try as we did in the war times. Let us not give up the hope that African gererally in that country can and will make it if we are determine.

To those who may not understand me whether I was commending on the article, just take it in anyway that it suit your understanding.

With the idea of the Obama’s victory being celebrated by the SPLA, the decision is somehow right. But I came to contemplate the responses made by (Deng Gai and Madit Magot) to be more logical than rest of the comments, and mind you, it is a personal perspective take it easy.

I love the fact that congratulation letter was sent to him he will understand more. On top that, this Gentleman knew very well his origin, because SPLA is trying to claim their share of Obama with Kenyans. All Luos are Sudanese originally; even White knew that, during his victory I was asked by one of my lectures if I knew Obama is A Sudanese not A Kenyan. I told her yeah I know he is our man.

Lastly but not least, that budget set aside has to be used for any other development pliz, South is still hungry resource Country even Obama knows.

    Ajak Deng Ajak.
