Jonglei capital overwhelm by floods

By Philip Thon Aleu

November 10, 2008 (BOR TOWN) – Breaking tradition of flooding in August, September or early October, residents of Bor town were nearly submerged Sunday night by flood that down huts and restrict movement.

Government says an “emergence measure” has been considered.

Pan de Machuor, Pan-gak and Pan de Liet (Bor town suburbs) have been critically hit. Lang-bar 2 and Block Ten too report water commotion in past weeks. Hundreds of people have been affected. Some families, frustrated or have no options, prefer building dykes, though overrun by the increasing water in less than an hour.

Asked for government response to the flood Monday morning, Hussein Mar Nyout – Jonglei State Minister for Local government and the deputy Governor, says there is one appropriate and applicable solution.

“We are talking to ASCOM Company so that they build a dyke [because it can stop water coming]. This is an emergency measure that we have a dyke here,” Mar Nyuot told Sudan Tribune at Pan de Machuor where the Nile River is thought to have depressed at its bank.

Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk, flanked by state ministers; Hussein Mar, John Amuor Kuol, Agot Alier Leek, Kengen Jackor and Taban Jouch, survey the area to evaluate the magnitude of the water as well as accessing likely effect on the residents.

“There is nothing we can do apart from building a dyke and open some canals so that water in the residential areas is drain back to the river,” Mar lamented. Estimating the effect of last night flood on town residents Nyout says: “A lot of people! A lot of people have been affected and even last night they did not sleep at all.”

A woman seated on a chair and resting her feet in water told the touring Government officials that she could not move away despite losing entire residential plot to water. “I will build my dyke with my children using stones,” she said.

Remote Counties of Pibor, Pachala, Twich East, Akobo, Khorfulus and Duk as well as the State host County of Bor reported flood this year. Highlighting flood-related impacts, Mar indicates that food production, animals’ diseases and human illnesses have been noteworthy this year.

Our name Bor was drived out of “flood” and therefore our people should give up.
If there is any little anyone can do like building dyke then that can help.
Thanks to leaders for doing their best to ask ascom to help build dyke.

Another thing the leaders must be keen is food.
Those who have nothing to eat have to be provided with necessary care.

    Don’t give up Buorkuo!

They mis use their land when comes to flood and starving then it is time to escape and grabb someone’e properties. Learn how to manage your land not destroying it and wondering around for better place to settle. Sorry for some people to claim themselves as real people. How can your prove yourseleves as people if you cannot carry afforestation and proper mangement of your own properties. So your escaping to other states for safety so that the arabs can take over your land or what? don’t panic coward go and plant tress, shot the arabs, descipline the murle and have self confidence not ranning like ladies looking for protection. I better allow you with few months to copy some knowledge so that you willl take to protect with your land and properties.

    Hi guys

Please don’t talk to Logic, he is just a dog without tail. I don’t think there is a human being who is happy even if he/she see an animal drowning.

So let the dog bark all he want because that will not make any difference. I think the more he bark, the more it will make it worst. But people of Jongolei will make it.

    God bless

    From future president

To this fool that call himself Logic

My friend I want to tell you point-blank your chronic hatred and futile speculation towards Dinka and more especially Bor’s people will never and never remove either prevent them from what they are. Land taking is not being discussed in that article, stop diverting and mixing up different issues.

You are dangerously stupid; you got to accept natural calamity is caused by no one else other than God, if you were logical enough as your name claim how did you miss this fact? There is no misuse of land in that article.

However, this issue of land-taking that is seen to obsess you all this time round can not be discussed on the website; there is right place to present that. Remember your insult will not prevent Land taking.
