University students in Uganda receive cash from GOSS president

November 13, 2008 (KAMPALA) – Sudanese university students in Uganda received financial support Saturday from Salva Kiir Mayardit, the president of the semi-autonomous region of Southern Sudan.

It is the second time that Kiir has sent a delegation to help support Southern Sudanese university students studying in Uganda, said Larco Lomayat, a Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) information officer.

Martin Majut Yak, the GOSS director for presidential affairs and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) national secretary for popular and syndicated organizations, headed the delegation. He addressed more than 2500 Southern Sudanse students in Kampala, Uganda on Saturday.

Yak explained that he had received letters from the South Sudanese student unions in Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya. He then took the letters to President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

“The president said, whether we have something or not, we must divide the peace dividend with our Southern Sudanese wherever they are,” said Yak.

The official told the Sudanese students, “I would like to emphasize on the unity of our people and the need for you the young people to promote unity because it will pre-requisite to your future co-existence. Unity is power, strength and is an ability to achieve your objectives. No country is built on tribes. With your determination and together with our great people like you, we can achieve a lot for our people and deliver peace dividends.”

Yak noted that the hard work and cooperation of Southern Sudanese students in Uganda and elsewhere would be necessary “to build what has been destroyed during the war.”

The official also discussed education in Sudan, saying, “Education is a top priority and all children under seven years of age are being registered in schools all over Southern Sudan, new schools are being built with the help of UNICEF and other NGOs.”

Students were paid based on a list drawn up by the leadership of the student body.

Before students received their financial support, they had to go through a verification process, and a table was set aside for complaints from those whose names were not in the list. These students’ names might later be added to the list by the student leadership, who will send an updated list to Juba, the capital of Southern Sudan.

“The payment process runs very smooth in Uganda because the students here are disciplined and are well organized,” said the president of the student union in Uganda.

Besides Martin Yak, the members of the GOSS delegation included Director General for Special Programs at the Ministry of Presidential Affairs Deng Deng Yai, Rev. Michael Saki, Simon Duku, Justin Modi and Comrade Korsuk, who presented the money to the Sudanese students at DIDI’s World In Kampala.

I would appreciate this if not done in triblism way, because i know that there are those corruptee who loot Goss income and bought with their houses in many parts of East Africa beside USA, UK and Australia, and all those people are the ones who are having their families in Uganda, Kenya and etc, so to make it fair this finanical help should be for whole southern students who are facing finanical issues not just one tribe. i have even seen those who hate Uganda, by complaining that dictator garang was murdered in Uganda, but wrong he was crush due to barbaric policy which was fough for the advantage of a single tribe to act on others and certainly the whole subrubs in Kampala are being occupied by those premature tribe who loot Goss income to buy with houses and some are now been presented on the media while billions have been consumed in silence. Be aware Mr president make every step in an equal manner otherwise your leading us backward.

Effort will done by GOSS, Salva Kirr is a visionary leader,he is trying to prepare the country young and old generations for the future challenges, the students needs support because it is not easy to complete studies under current circumstances in some countries, the students need to be reminded that they have to come back and contribute to the country when they finish, they can now get better jobs and high payments in Sudan, so finish and come back and help build your country.

    Not bad at all!

Thanks to the leadership of LT Gen. Vice Pres. of the Republic and President of South Sudan. It is not bad at all for the head of GOSS to respond to the South Sudan Students studying in neighbouring countries like Uganda and Kenya. I think, in this world of today, no country will succeed without educated population. Assisting the students is a better thing to do. It is not to late for the GOSS to do something much better than that money deliver on the bases of request but not in the GOSS will.

I don’t know whether the GOSS have any program that give assistance to the students chiefly those in the Secondary schools and the Universities! If there is a program, than that’s good but if there’s no program, than the GOSS need to establish that program to assist Uni. students. The program should include those studying abroad and those studying at home. It should be ongoing assistance not just for one day when the students feel the pain in their bodies!

I know it is hard for a semi-autonomy country like South Sudan to have more money to support all social activities but we should try our best to cross to the other side of the line. I think, for some years to come, we South Sudanese will fight two wars! We should equip our minds such that we can have intellectuals and in the same time have pysical power (Army) as well. You have seen it in the Western world, education and defense are the major priority in every nation in the west.

If we are going to succeed, we must take a education and pysical power serious and put aside greediness and tribalism! If we denounce all that, than we can be a better nation one day.

NB- Logic! Are you really a logic boy! I don’t think so! Man you leave your egoist and hatred aside and do something different for your family if you have one! This assistance is not for one tribe, it is for all South Sudanese students studying in Uganda! You try man to behave like a human being! You always talk about civilisation! A civilised person can not preach hatred and jealousy all the time!

Stop it man if you have mind and heart!
