ICC prosecutor to charge Darfur rebels over peacekeepers attack next week

November 14, 2008 (THE HAGUE) – The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said on Friday he will present a case next week for the indictment of some rebel commanders accused of attacking peacekeepers in Sudan’s Darfur region.

Luis Moreno-Ocampo’s third case on Darfur investigates a rebel attack on the Haskanita military base last year that left 10 African Union (AU) soldiers dead and one missing. Ocampo made the announcement during a speech Friday at the opening session for the assembly of ICC state parties.

The attack by a large, organised group of heavily armed men who overran southern Darfur’s Haskanita camp in 30 vehicles took place on Saturday September 29 night, the worst assault on the under-manned force since it deployed in July 2004.

The Haskanita attack has also been condemned by the UN Security Council, the AU Peace and Security Council, and other world leaders, including the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, China, Russia, the League of Arab States, the European Union, as well as the Sudan neighbouring states.

The ICC chief prosecutor said last July that he had information about two rebel commanders responsible of the attack but he did not disclose the names and number of suspects.

“I am focusing my efforts in the third case with the rebels attacking Haskanita,” he said. “We have information about the names of two commanders who were allegedly responsible for this.”

The beleaguered force of 7,000 AU peacekeepers in Darfur is replaced by the hybrid U.N./AU troops and police since the beginning of 2008. The AU Darfur force has lost 59 men since its formation, 30 of them in attacks.

Ocampo!, “Leave AFRICA alone”, and you should go to IRAN to prosecute Almadinejad and Basher Assad.

YES, Mr. Ocambo now you are on the right tract to apply equal justice on both sides to push forward solutions to Darfur problem. If you spoil your son too much you will destroy his future life and rebels felt spoilt to stand steadfast against any solution to Darfur crisis for only nonsense reasons. Moreover, they actually feel free to commit crimes in the region confidently the government only will take the blame and responsibilities as ever. Mr. Ocambo go ahead in the new direction, if you really want to apply justice, you have two fighting factions and only one victim. if you look for your ICC to be more credible, highly respected and takes value of real participation in the international peace and security you have to act as you plan.

ONE THING AT TIME Mr. Ocampo, I for one will not agree with you this time round. You seem to be playing but not doing the justice to fight for innocent people in Sudan. You are now spoiling the good sauce you cook in July which is about to be ready for eating now. I urge you to get Mr. Bashir in to ur court first before looking for rebel’s commanders. Arresting Bashir is enough to bring a long lasting peace not only in Dafur but to the entire Sudan.
