Sudan says it received 12 MIG fighters from Russia; US critical

November 14, 2008 (MOSCOW) – The Sudanese top military official revealed today that his country bought fighter jets from Russia.

Sudan’s defense minister Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein told reporters during a visit to the Russian capital that they have received a new shipment of 12 MIG-29’s.

“Yes, it’s all done. The planes have been bought” Hussein was quoted as saying to in response to a question about a contract for the purchase of the 12 planes.

The Sudanese defense minister did not say when the fighters were contracted for or when they were received.

Last July a source told Sudan Tribune that a dozen MIG-29 combat fighters were shipped discreetly by planes through a Belarusian company.

But the source could not confirm whether the fighters were actually sold by Belarus or they simply came through the East European country.

The Russian and Belarusian governments at the time vehemently denied the report.

The announcement drew strong rebuke by the US administration describing it “as the last thing that country needs”.

“Sudan is a poor country and to go out and buy MIG’s, obviously that’s something we don’t think is a positive step” US State Department deputy spokesman Robert Wood told reporters when asked if such a purchase undermined Sudan’s call for a truce in Darfur.

This week the Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir pledged a ceasefire and disarmament of the government supported Janjaweed militias in the troubled region of Darfur.
If the MIG-29’s are used in Darfur it would be in violation of UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution 1591 which prohibits selling arms to Sudan government or Darfur rebels for use in the war ravaged region.

Russia has been accused by Amnesty International (AI) of supplying arms to Sudan for use in Darfur but the Russian foreign ministry denied the charge.

Last May a MIG-29 was shot down by Darfur rebels over the Sudanese twin capital city of Omdurman and its Russian pilot was killed.

This is not an easy task to be discuss, we are not working for unity or CPA in Sudan. Al bashir is preparing for something yet Goss is having luxious time. Mr president don’t rely on obama i think Obama is not going to supply the whole of Sudan with a maximum security. To be honesty i urge Goss to think and have some practical on hands, people are suffering in Durfur and South instead al bashir should send them food (aids) to survive, yet he is spending the wealth from durfur and south oil on weapons. The oncoming election is a hot period ever in the history of Sudan, if anyone believe that am joking wait and see with your eyes. NCP indications are all obvious to everyone yet none of Goss has taken this into a serious account, i don’t understand if NCP was approve in the CPA to import weapons while Goss was not, why did they stick their eyes on Goss all the time. Those countries which are milking al bashir pocket of oil with weapons are the worse encouragers of genocide in Sudan, and as a premature policy he does not understand about their future if South and Durfur has come to a seperation. Anyway let him just act later he will regreat like a whore been raped on the street.

YES TO PEACE BUT NO TO UNITY WITH ARABS

Thank you very much for your briliant and God given brain. When I went to the bushe in my young age, I thought the SPLA officers who commanded us were really fighting for the country or to relieve the pain arab had inflicted to our innocent and pure hearted southerners.

I didn’t know that most of the officers were fighting to rescue or assist their empty pockets from hunger of money. Now since their pockets are full of cash, the everything is all set. meanwhile the arabs turn out to be only people who had been fighting for their unity and the future of their country and the future of their children as well.

Now where are we heading? Are we for peace, war or unity? I don’t know where southsudan stand right now.

Let me stop there because if I say a lot, people think I am against the government.

But My question is that, was Dr. Garang’s death means death to southerners or live to southerners. All these God knows.

I hope that don’t offend anybody.

    God bless

Bashir buying 12 MIG planes is the alarming developments for the people of Darfur and Southern sudan as well,To tells you my sibling it happen in Sir Lanka when the 25 years all war between the Timor Tigers minority fought for their independent state of Northern Sir Lanka so the peace was signed between Timor and the Gvt in 2006 and when this year after the government have already strengthens its army everything was then council and will happen to us as well if we just focus on CPA then our army, don’t let history repeat itself like in ANYA ANYA ONE.
