Sudan’s Tagadum coalition holds military responsible for safety of Nuba detainees

October 11, 2024 (SHENDI) – Sudan’s political coalition Tagadum on Friday said it holds the military intelligence in Shendi city, the River Nile state, responsible for the safety of detainees from the Nuba Mountains region following reports of mass arrests.

The detainees, who had recently arrived in Shendi seeking refuge from fighting in Khartoum Bahri, were reportedly arrested upon arrival.

“The legal committee is following with great concern the arbitrary arrests and illegal detention of the people of the Nuba Mountains area,” Tagadum said in a statement.

The anti-war coalition called for the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained. It condemned what it called “repressive methods” employed by the military intelligence against the Nuba people.

Tagadum said these actions underscore the persistent discrimination faced by marginalized communities in Sudan.

The Sudanese security services recently increased security measures in the northern Sudan states following repeated threats by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to attack these regions. During the past months, the paramilitary group recruited displaced in Khartoum from Kordofan and Darfur, as well as refugees from South Sudanese and Ethiopians.

Human rights organizations and political groups have repeatedly raised concerns about harassment, abuse, and arbitrary arrests of civilians and activists in areas under the control of both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
