Telecoms firms in South Sudan announce tariff adjustments

October 21, 2024 (JUBA) -South Sudan’s three main telecom operators, MTN, Digitel and Zain have announced tariff increases, citing the Central Bank’s increase in foreign exchange rate.

The operators, in a joint statement, said the National Communications Authority and the Central Bank had agreed to adjust the telecom tariffs in response to the official exchange rate increases.

“The adjustments will occur in three phases from October to December 2024. The first change will occur on the night of 18 October 2024, followed by subsequent changes on 18 November and 18 December,” partly read the statement.

The tariffs increases, operators said, will secure the country’s telecom sector’s long-term viability in the face of unpredictable economic conditions, stressing their commitment to provide dependable and affordable services to their clients through network investment in the country.

Citizens have expressed their discontent, saying the tariffs increase will negatively affect them.

The Central Bank of South Sudan announced an increase in the official exchange rate in May.
