South Sudan: Germany donates €2m for gender-based violence fight

October 22, 2024 (JUBA) – Germany has given €2 million to the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) to boost gender based violence (GBV) fight among women and girls in South Sudan.

The donation will benefit 14,000 people across the country among them 11,000 women and girls.

“We put the needs of the most vulnerable groups in society first, and with this new funding, we want to support women and girls who have been the target of gender-based violence. We must all join forces in the fight against gender-based violence in South Sudan,” Christian Sedat, the German Ambassador to South Sudan said in a statement.

“With our support to UNICEF, we want to ensure that victims have improved access to services necessary for healing and recovery and that they can feel safe in their communities,” he added.

The German ambassador reiterated their continued commitment to the people of South Sudan.

The UNICEF’s Country Representative, Hamida Ramadhani lauded the German government for its continued support towards the programme seeking to end gender based violence in South Sudan.

“Through this initiative, we will provide comprehensive responses to gender-based violence, including health services, case management, and psychosocial support,” said Ramadhani.

She added, “By empowering women-led organizations and scaling up innovative programs, we aim to create safer communities and enhance resilience.”

This partnership, UNICEF official stressed, underscores its shared dedication to protecting and uplifting the most vulnerable women and girls impacted by conflict, displacement, and floods.

The program seeks to ensure that women and girls, especially the most marginalized, have access to services to enhance their safety and well-being and enjoy lives without falling victim to violence.

Through the German donation, UNICEF will reportedly target areas that are heavily impacted by recurrent flooding, inter-communal violence, and hosting refugees and returnees from Sudan.
