UN sounds alarm over escalating violence in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state

October 28, 2024 (UNITED NATIONS) – The United Nations voiced grave concern on Sunday over escalating violence in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state, citing reports of deadly attacks on civilians and mass displacement.

U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) reportedly launched a major assault across 30 towns and villages in Al Jazirah between Oct. 20-25.

“We have received horrific reports of entire villages being attacked, with civilians killed, detained and displaced in huge numbers,” Dujarric said, quoting Joyce Msuya, acting U.N. humanitarian chief.

An estimated 47,000 people have fled the fighting, with many seeking shelter in Gedaref and Kassala states. The U.N. and its partners are providing assistance to those displaced.

“Those displaced by the violence urgently need food, shelter, health care and protection support,” Dujarric said. “Many of the wounded also need medical attention.”

The U.N. expressed concern for civilians trapped in conflict zones and those fleeing in search of safety.

International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope arrived in Sudan on Sunday for a three-day visit to assess the humanitarian crisis and rally international support.

Pope will visit displacement sites and engage with affected communities, the U.N. said.
