Sudan advertises senior civil service jobs in break with patronage
November 1, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s cabinet has advertised seven senior civil service jobs, breaking with a tradition of appointments by political patronage, state media reported on Friday.
The vacancies, including the heads of the state shipping line, the internal audit bureau and the social security agency, follow the dismissal last week of the tax chief, a Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) member.
JEM, a faction in the ruling coalition, objected to the sacking of its member, exposing tensions within the government.
The SUNA news agency said applicants must be fluent in English and Arabic and hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
The conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that erupted in April has disrupted most government institutions. Many have relocated to the eastern port city of Port Sudan, which is serving as a temporary capital.
