Sudan attends meeting for inception of Pan-African Parliament

KHARTOUM, March 17, 2004 (SUNA) — Speaker of the National Assembly, Ahmad Ibrahim al-Tahir, Wednesday [17 March] left for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, heading Sudan’s parliamentary delegation to the foundation meeting of the Pan-African Parliament.

Al-Tahir explained that the deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Angelo Beda, is nominated for the post of the chairman of the Pan-African Parliament, pointing out to Beda’s rich parliamentary experience and his credibility among the African parliamentarians.

It is to be noted that the meeting will elect a chairman, four deputies and chairmen of the committees of the Pan-African Parliament as well as the regulations of the Parliament.

The African parliament will be placed temporary in Addis Ababa pending selecting a permanent place. The meeting will be attended by five members from each of the 38 countries that ratified the protocol for establishing the Pan-African Parliament.

Sudan will be represented by Angelo Beda, Prof Su’ad al-Fatih, Prof Ibrahim Ghandur, Prof Malik Husayn and Dr Idris Yusuf.
