W. Equatoria celebrates World Aids Day

December 2, 2008 (YAMBIO) – The Western Equatoria State (WES) citizens celebrated a colorful international World Aids Day in the capital of the state last Monday. Also a hospice in WES once commemorated World AIDS Day by hosting a memorial to mourn those who had lost their lives to HIV/AIDS.

After the introduction of life-saving antiretroviral treatment, this hospice chose instead to mark World AIDS Day with a celebration of life, because the people who were once dying in their care are now living and thriving members of society.

The number of people accessing voluntary counseling and HIV testing services in WES has quadrupled in the last five years, thanks to efforts supported by ACROSS and AIDS Commission. However, fewer clients visiting these centers in 2007 and 2008 were first time testers and officials estimate only about half of the adult WES population has ever been tested. While this number is actually progressive, especially in regional comparisons, the need to increase access to counseling and testing remains a focus of the AIDS Commission plan.

During the occasion, WES Governor, H.E Jemma Nunu Kumba said that, “HIV/AIDS has claimed many lives of WES citizens due to lack of awareness and counseling centers,” she added that, “WES has more VCT centers now in the seven counties of Nzara, Tambura, Yambio, Ibba, Maridi, Mundri and Mvolo and efforts are under to set up same centers in the others counties.”

However, Jemma pointed out that, “The state government is also committed in delivering good services to the people living positively with HIV/AIDS.”

She warned the youths, the married and the unmarried to stay faithful and protect themselves from the deadly disease.

She reiterated that, “For the community to succeed in development, WES need to be healthy, provide food security, community empowerment because HIV/AIDS is manageable disease, it can be defeated behavior and attitude changes.”

WES government is set to talk with WFP to help supply food items to HIV/AIDS patients.

Jemma went on to say that, “all the stakeholders involved in HIV/AIDS must lead in the front not from the rare and this is the way.”

She stressed that, “Citizens must deliver quality services to all without prejudice, description and stigmatization.
