November 11, 2024 (WAD MADANI) – At least 71 cases of rape, including attacks on minors, have been reported in villages in Sudan’s eastern Al Jazirah state, a source with the Al Jazirah Conference group told Sudan Tribune on Monday.

A 5-year-old girl died after being raped following recent attacks on the area by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the source said, adding that the figure likely represents only a fraction of the actual number of assaults.

The source accused the RSF of detaining dozens of women in one village after expelling its residents and said RSF fighters had kidnapped a number of women and taken them to unknown locations.

The RSF has not commented on the allegations of rape and kidnapping.

On Sunday, the Al Jazirah Conference, a civilian group formed after the RSF took control of the state in December, said in a statement that the RSF had killed 1,237 people in villages in eastern and northern Al Jazirah state over the past 21 days.

The RSF launched retaliatory attacks in the area after its commander in Al Jazirah state, Abu Aqla Kikl, defected and joined the army in October.

These attacks have displaced thousands of civilians, prompting international condemnation of abuses committed by the RSF.
