Over 343,000 flee violence in Sudan’s Al Jazirah
November 16, 2024 (NEW YORK) – More than 343,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state in less than a month due to escalating violence, the United Nations said on Friday, warning of a dire humanitarian situation.
The attacks on civilians erupted in eastern Al Jazirah on October 21 when Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander Abu Aqla Keikal defected to the Sudanese army, triggering retaliatory attacks against civilians by the RSF. Hundreds have been killed and thousands more displaced, with many seeking refuge in the neighbouring states of Gedaref and Kassala.
“The situation is critical,” said Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General. “These people have walked for days, arriving with nothing. They urgently need shelter, food, and medical assistance.”
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that many displaced people, including children, the elderly, and the sick, are sheltering in the open. OCHA also noted a rise in cholera cases in Gedaref, likely linked to the influx of displaced people and poor sanitary conditions.
The UN and its partners are working to provide emergency aid, but the needs are overwhelming. Priorities include tents, plastic sheeting, heaters, mattresses, medicine, food, and milk for young children.
“The international community must step up and provide the necessary resources to prevent a further catastrophe,” Dujarric urged.
The violence in Al Jazirah is the latest chapter in Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which erupted in April between the army and the RSF. The fighting has resulted in a widespread humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and facing acute shortages of food and essential supplies.
