New armed group vows to avenge RSF atrocities in Al Jazirah State
November 16, 2024 (WAD MADANI) – A newly formed armed group in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state has vowed to fight the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and seek revenge for alleged atrocities committed against civilians.
The Al Jazirah Liberation Movement announced its formation this week, pledging to support the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and “hold the RSF accountable” for alleged human rights abuses, including mass killings, rape, and looting, in villages across eastern Al Jazirah.
The RSF has been accused of carrying out reprisal attacks in the region since October 20, following clashes with the SAF. The violence has resulted in a dire humanitarian situation, with the city of Al Hilaliya currently under siege and a death toll exceeding 450.
“Every drop of blood spilt in Al Hilaliya will strengthen our resolve to seek revenge and expel these criminals from our land,” the group said in a statement. It called on young people to join its ranks and warned that perpetrators “will not escape justice.”
The emergence of the Al Jazirah Liberation Movement adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The group’s stated intention to fight alongside the SAF raises questions about coordination and potential for further escalation.
The movement’s announcement has sparked debate on social media, with some questioning its military capabilities and the need for another armed faction in a conflict already involving various militias and civilian resistance groups.
