Tensions high after slayings of Nuer in Ethiopia

December 2, 2008 (ADDIS ABABA) — The situation remains tense in parts
of Gambella region of Ethiopia in the wake of an attack that took
place near the Sudan border on Nov. 22.

Relatives visiting the wounded at a hospital in Gambella received
threats and a local man who took photos of the villages was briefly
jailed, according to confidential sources.

Since the attacks, some children who ran to the bush are still missing
and families are living without shelter.

Nine inhabitants of the Puldeng and Laare villages were killed in the
attack, including two children and an elderly man, and 23 were
allegedly wounded. Two attackers were killed and six wounded from a
mixed force of Nuer, Anyuak and highlander police. The attackers set
fire to homes and killed or looted numerous livestock.

Some observers accused members of the regional council with
masterminding the attacks: “Ato Goaner Yer and Ato James Deng Chuol
repeated Omod Obang’s genocide practices in Gambella regional state
while it seems that the federal government chooses silence,” wrote a
commentator at SouthSudan.net, referring to the president of Gambella
Regional State, Omod Obang Olum, who was the chief of security in
Gambella when hundreds of Anyuaks were killed in 2003.

The regional council denied the use of vehicles to the wounded to move
them to medical facilities. But the regional council offered food to
the villagers, who refused to take it.

The victims of the attack were from the Cienyejani section of Gajaak Nuer.

Goaner Yer Zuor, the deputy chairman of the regional council, deployed
special police forces around his village on the Sudan border at the
same time as the attacks, said Cienyejanis.

“Goaner sees the whole Cienyjani as his future leadership threat just
only because of the political differences that he personally has with
Mr. Luke Kue, one of the present prominent politicians of the
Cienyjani clan,” explained SouthSudan.net.

But others closer to Zuor said that he was defending other clans from
the Cienyejani, including the Cienyewaw, which had fought with the
Cienyejani for about ten years before hostilities settled down.
Subsequently they stated that the police were attacked outside of the
village, although the Cienyejanis dismissed this, saying that they
would not have made such an attack when their cattle and families were
present.

The federal government is conducting an investigation, and a team is in Gambella.

Nuer in Ethiopia while other phoniest arrogance are in Greater Equatoria. This is what they expecting to be done to them in Equatoria before they will surrender their stupid intention of settling here. Leaders are fooling after money yet they are claiming to have a control over the nation. This stupidness must be chastised otherwise. One day a remarkable things will happen in this nation which is now been ran by gangs. People must not convince other that the issue of the IDPs in Greater Equatoria must be taken as a simple case, around the world no body will except to ignore his/her hips on a nail. This will never make a confortable lives to the people of Greater Equatoria sharing a piece of their own land with those fouls. Pack and leave before its too late to see some ranning naked. A genuine always gives warning before proceeding, but ignoring this concern will lead to a great ache.

You have been given a enough time to copy whatever you can take into your villages and huts, so its time to leave slowly and safely. Your madness will never allow you to be in this land, whether by force or not you must leave whether physical or in coffins. This is my serious and promise oaths, a dog can surrender a butchery at once but for a worse creatures like you will always deserve to be hit several times.

Mr. Big Logic, I once guessed that you came from Equatoria not because of your names but because of weak personalities I saw in you. You should not judge or count everything on Nuer or Dinkas as you always do. You donot know how painful it used to be when you count any heinous results on specific tribe when it was actually done by a particular person. Nuers are part of Sudan and some are now in Ethiopia as Ethiopian. Now if Nuer who are citizens in that land do anything bad there, do you think that it may be wise for you to point your figure to those who are in Sudan with you here. YOU ARE GOOD FOR NOTHING IN THIS CASE. I am not from Nuer nor have they done anything good to the people whom I am coming from. You see what they did in Lakes, an SPLM official was slain innocently in his home village at Yirol this year but people of Lakes did not come to public places for revenge and they would have done it successfully.

I FINALLY CONCLUDE TODAY THAT YOU ARE A TRAITOR AND IT IS GOD THAT WILL JUDGE YOUR MANNERS.

Lack of Ethiopian federal government intervention with deadly genocide carried out in Ethiopia, Gambella region, in Puldeang village by Gambella regional vice president and regional Justice and Security Affairrs head
I just want to bring into your attention the result of Ethiopian federal government team led by the Ethiopian defense Minister that came to Gambella regional on December 03, 2008 to take measures re genocide in Puldeang Village and others problems that had happening in the region.

As the result of genocide, there were total of 9 dead, in which 2 were burnt in the houses, 23 wounded; the wounded were not brought to hospital in Gambella on time, since the government was not giving focus to the dead and wounded of that villagers. Three days after, a certain group of Nuer officials made a financial contribution and rented commercial bus for transporting the 23 wounded. After their arrival in Gambella, the bus driver and three others who went with the bus were arrested at police station for 5 days. This was because the VP and Justice Security affair head do not want people to see what they had done with their order in the village as you can see in the previous messages with the photos of the village burn. 256 cows killed on spot, about 480 cows got wounded and still dying till now, about 683 tukuls were burn to ache, and bodies of some kids are not found so far. What a hell is this? Where are the human right watch in this category? Call the PM office and get updated with the issue, every body knows it. It is really a big disappointment.

Federal government did not take any action in one way or another on the recent killing (November 22-23, 2008) of innocent villagers of Puldeang village. The killing had disappointed many Nuers both in Sudan, US and Gambella region since the regional vice president and regional Justice and Security head who gave the order to Special police forces to fight the villagers with RPG, PKM, garnets and Kalashnikov for their personal interest, did it knowingly. There had been a lot of discussion re different problems in Gambella before the commit of the recent genocide. E.g the development in the region stuck due to the leadership problems especially on the Nuer side by Mr. VP Goaner Yer Dhuor who is mainly appointing weak Nuers and his relatives to be on power while they had no capacity to carry out the work needed to be performed for the benefit of the region at large.

As mention above on December 3, 2008, the federal government team led by the Ethiopian Defense Minister proceeds with the political evaluation since problem is highly increasing in the region. The political evaluation was carried out with all the regional Central Committee, starting from the regional president top to the bottom.

Federal government led by Defense Minister did not even took a single action on those who were found to be guilty of killing the civilian and the ones that who committed other problems including corruption in the region etc. the reason is unknown so far from the federal government side why there were no action being taken.

The civilians whose their kids, women and men were killed are questioning themselves of the reason why the killers were not brought to justice. Is it because the killers are the ones leading the region? If so, why the federal government who is the overall power of the country is not taking any action on them? Did the federal government sees the Nuer blood as nothing or is it because they are Gambellians (black in colours) and not highlander (red in colour)? The civilian are now coming to conclusion that the federal can only intervene if highlander (red in colour) are killed? Is that true? I hope that is true because if it were another ethnic group like highlander (red in colour), the federal government would have taken action upon those who committed genocide.

According to the news that are coming from the Puldeang villagers is that: they will dealt with the entire government official (they cannot differentiate the polices, ENDF, Militias, they see them as the authorities who kills them. They can also not differentiate cars whether it belong to government, NGOs or commercial cars). In addition, if the road is blocked by the civilian, then there will be no access for the government to the entire Nuer zone/ county which is having four woredas/ Payams since the Puldeang road is the only road to these woredas. Unless action is taken on the killers, otherwise many problems will arise in the region that will almost be like the December 3, 2003 (killing of Anuak by ENDF).

    Note:
There had been many problems in the region that led the federal team to come to Gambella. Among them were corruption, torturing of some group of high ranking official that are being beaten in the hotels, roads by a formed group of VP due to political division. Some being accused for nothing and sent to prisons. Some being sent to central prison and having no court appointment and no proper judgment. Many judges and prosecutors who were trying to work according to law have been dismissed, some transferred to other locations where they cannot participate in the court system. e.g. Mr. Tut Rut of Gambella woreda court president, Mr. Nyuon Gatbel of Mejanger zone court etc.

All the above happened because of the involvement of Gambella Regional Supreme court president (Mr. Changkuoth Beal) in the politics while he supposed to be neutral and not to take any part in the politics. He is the senior advisor to the VP as well as his brother. The mess came because of his order to different courts to do what he likes by violating the courts law. Eg. Puot Wuol, Peter Reat, kebele leaders of Puldeang (Gatluak Yang, and two others) are in Central prison for unknown reason so far. The Court laws are not properly applied in Gambella region, that was why some of you might heard/ read about 5 government officials that were sent to central prison without standing before the court/ judge (were directly taken from the police station to central prison), the court wrote a letter for the individual as if they were in the court while they were not. That was the reason why fighting was about to arise in Gambella (on October 9, 2008). Offices were closed on that day for half a day, road were blocked and finally those officials were release by the order from the Ethiopian government federal police in Addis Ababa and not regional government since the regional president and his vice were contradicting one another on the issue.

However, all were in vain since the federal government did not take any action while witness were there and all the realities were raise in the evaluation process.

    My view:
I am afraid of all complication that are on the way to happen in Gambella region if the federal government will not take a proper action on those people who were found guilty in the evaluation process that were conducted by the Defense Minister. I want all the readers to look at this and give a proper comment if any one can help and save the lives of many people who are going to die soon!

I do not know what the federal government if afraid for. Comparatively, is it the detention of some individuals to have a better Gambella or death of many people that is on the way to come? According to nuer culture, the revenge comes in if some one is killed and no compensation done.
