Muslims celebrate Eid Al-Adha in Rumbek

By Manyang Mayom

December 10, 2008 (RUMBEK) – Thousands of Muslims gathered Monday at Rumbek Freedom Square to celebrate Eid Al-Adha. It is the third celebration of Eid Al-Adha in Rumbek during the period since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Addressing the crowd, the minister of social development and religious affairs, Peter Guien Enock, said the government of Lakes state is working together with all the religious in the state.

Guien urged the Muslim population to generously practice their religious rights as stipulated in the CPA. He also denied the Islamic connection with terrorism, saying this characterization is inaccurate.

In the opinion of the minister of information and communication, Agad Chol Mabuong, Islam is a religion in which one feels a connection with God, it is one’s own personal belief and not for the purpose of marginalization despite different beliefs and ethnicities in the Sudan.

In February the construction of a mosque was suspended by the Lakes state authority and six staff of the mosque were arrested. After heavy dialogue the six members were released from jail. Nevertheless, Lakes state governor Daniel Awet Akot denied the report and he said that mosque construction was suspended for purposes of town planning and opening up roads in the state.

Responding to these events, in April 2008 the Sudanese first vice-president and president of the government of Southern Sudan expressed concern over the arrests and the decision to prevent Rumbek’s Muslims from rebuilding the mosque.

A select group of Muslims, including government officials, joined hands together and visited the Lakes state correctional prison when the celebration ended. They gave a bull to the inmates and some sweets to patients in the regional hospital.

The commissioner of Rumbek central county, Abraham Makoi Bol, urged the Muslim community in Lakes state to apply for more land in Rumbek. He also added that the majority of traders in Rumbek are Muslim but most of them live in their shops.

He also dismissed the allegation that the state government is against Muslims. He said that things like the suspension of mosque construction last year was surely a surveying issue and had nothing to do with religion or belief.

Makoi affirmed that eight people are now arrested for suspected involvement in gang activities in Rumbek town.

dinka islamic can not do any thing to us like terrorism, they can be slaughter like chickens if they wants. I don’t know if they can even pray louder in the morning since they lack teeth, becuase i know that a sheep and dog can produce a loud noise compared to a goat which is missing some of the teeth. It is not an insult, but it is a real issue for the people to know. Fool may mis understand me. Politics must not be mix with religion, race and culture. Let them exercise their freedom in a good manner not to get engage in terrorism or shria law otherwise they will regret.
