December 9, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudanese military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan met with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Monday, as Sudan urged the League to prevent member states from meddling in its internal affairs.

The meeting follows Sudan’s formal complaint to the U.N. Security Council against the United Arab Emirates, which it accuses of providing financial and military support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

“We have called on the Arab League to hold an emergency meeting to neutralize some member states that have interventions in Sudanese affairs,” said government spokesman and Culture and Information Minister Khalid Aleisir.

Aleisir urged the League to take action to limit external interference in Sudan.

Aboul Gheit arrived in Port Sudan for a two-day visit, where he is meeting with senior Sudanese officials.

The Sovereign Council said in a statement that Burhan and Aboul Gheit discussed the conflict and the need for an immediate ceasefire. Acting Foreign Minister Ali Youssif and Sudan’s representative to the Arab League, Imad al-Din Adawi, also attended the meeting.

Aboul Gheit said he expressed the Arab League’s support for Sudan and its people, and stressed the need for reconstruction and the return of displaced people and refugees.

He said the meeting addressed the humanitarian crisis and the need for coordinated support from the Arab League, the international community, and the African Union to restore stability in Sudan.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssif and Aboul Gheit also held talks. Youssif said Sudan’s priorities are to achieve security and stability and continue humanitarian relief efforts.

He said the League had helped mobilize regional and international support for the humanitarian response and called for its support in development and reconstruction.

The Arab League said Aboul Gheit’s visit demonstrates solidarity with Sudan and support for its stability and territorial integrity.
