The United Nations and residents of the disputed oil rich Sudanese town of Abyei said that violence erupted again there Friday, leaving two policemen dead, and prompting a concerned reaction from the U.N. mission in Sudan.

The conflict between Sudan’s north and south is separate from that in the western Darfur region, where a different violent flare-up Friday left three policemen and at least 15 Darfur residents dead in tribal fighting following an attack by tribesmen on police troops.

Abyei lies just north of the disputed boundary line between north and south Sudan, which fought a civil war for more than two decades before a 2005 peace agreement. It is a volatile region that remains contested between northerners and southerners despite the accord.

The flare-up Friday started with a scuffle between policemen and an Arab butcher who declined to move to a new town market. He argued with the newly deployed police and stabbed a policeman.

An Arab tribal chief, Mukhtar Babu Nimr, said the policeman was taken to hospital but that violence ensued, mostly due to a “misunderstanding.” The police fired in the air to disperse a crowd, and the newly deployed soldiers fired back, believing they were under attack, he said.

An Abyei resident, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said the two security units disagreed over how to resolve the butcher issue. The resident said two policemen were killed in the violence.

The U.N. statement deplored the violence, saying the mission hoped it up won’t derail a new agreement to diffuse tension in the town. The U.N. mission also regretted that the flare-up involved newly deployed joint police and military units meant to defuse tensions.

The head of U.N. mission in Sudan, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, said he “strongly urges the parties to take all necessary measures to avoid any further outbreaks of violence, and to ensure that today’s unfortunate incident does not impede the peaceful implementation of the Abyei road map.”

An all-out confrontation in May between northern and southern security troops killed scores and left the town deserted. Few residents have since returned, citing insecurity. The newly deployed police and military units are composed of members from the rival sides, and so is the town’s interim administration.
