Sudan’s RSF attacks army base with drones in Shendi
December 11, 2024 (SHENDI) – Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a drone attack on an army base in the city of Shendi on Wednesday, witnesses said, the latest in a series of attacks on the city.
The army’s air defences engaged the drones, which arrived in waves at the 3rd Infantry Division base in Shendi, River Nile State, early in the morning.
Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and said the drones caused a brief power cut in the city.
Shendi is about 150 km (93 miles) north of the capital, Khartoum. This army base is one of the closest military units to RSF positions at the Khartoum oil refinery, about 70 km (43 miles) north of the capital.
The RSF has also targeted the cities of Damar and Atbara in River Nile State with drones. The army has repelled numerous attacks on Atbara airport, about 310 km (193 miles) from Khartoum, throughout November and December.
The River Nile State Security Committee said the drones targeting the airport were launched from outside the state and have a range of up to 500 km (311 miles).
Earlier this month, Merowe airport in Northern State, about 400 km (249 miles) north of Khartoum, was also attacked by a swarm of 16 drones.
