Erdogan offers mediation in Sudan-UAE dispute

December 13, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan offered to mediate between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates in a phone call with Sudanese army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Friday, according to a statement from Sudan’s Sovereign Council.

Erdogan expressed Turkey’s support for Sudan’s unity and stability and reiterated his country’s backing for the Sudanese people, the statement said.

“Erdogan expressed Turkey’s readiness to mediate between Sudan and the UAE to achieve peace and security in Sudan,” it added.

Burhan welcomed any Turkish role in ending the conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and called for increased Turkish investment. He praised Erdogan and his government for their support.

Burhan also commended Turkey’s role in promoting regional peace and stability and highlighted its handling of the Syrian crisis.

A statement from the Turkish presidency said Erdogan’s offer was contingent on preventing foreign intervention in Sudan, ensuring peace and stability, and protecting the country’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.

Sudan accuses the UAE of providing military and logistical support to the RSF, which has been fighting the Sudanese army since April 15, 2023. Sudan has submitted a dossier to the UN Security Council with alleged evidence of this support.
