Sudan to construct Darfur road

December 19, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese government today has decided to construct a road to link western Sudan region of Darfur with the Khartoum.

The secretary general of the Initiative of Sudan’s People, Jalal Yusof Al-Degair, announced today that the construction of Ingaz Western Road comes in implementation of the resolutions of the large consultation forum on the resolution of Darfur conflict held last November.

The contract of construction of the road will be signed on next Wednesday in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, he added.

The construction of the Ingaz Western Road had been decided since the nineties as one of the major projects of the Islamist Junta in Khartoum after 1989 coup d’état but its implementation was several times delayed due to corruption accusations between the Sudanese Islamists in the past.

Al-Degair said that President Omer Al-Bashir presented a time table to implement the resolutions of the forum and the bodies charged with execution of development and education projects.

He also added that the meeting discussed ways to face the media onslaught against the Sudanese government on Darfur and decided to adopt a plan of action to explain the policy of the government in Darfur.

The Forum of Sudan’s people adopted on November 12 a series of resolution to end the five year conflict in Darfur, among others it decided to accelerate efforts to repatriate the displaced to their villages and homes.

Also it called to reconstruct the region and adopted a political platform for the peace talks with the rebels. The President Omer Al-Bashir announced at the closing meeting a unilateral ceasefire in Darfur.
