Bari complain of ill treatment in South Sudan
December 21, 2008 (KHARTOUM) – The Bari community in Khartoum issued a statement last week voicing strong criticisms of the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS), which rules autonomously over the diverse peoples of Sudan’s vast and fertile southern reaches.
The Bari are an agricultural people residing mostly in Juba district of Central Equatoria. But like other southern peoples, some of the Bari moved to Khartoum as they sought new opportunities or fled fighting from Sudan’s decades of wars.
The statement listed twelve grievances and threatened to reject South Sudan’s landmark 2005 comprehensive peace agreement. Moreover, the key demand in the document was to move the capital of GOSS from Juba to any other city in the south.
Signed Dec. 15 by Swaka Phillip Lado, the official spokesman of the Bari community in Khartoum, the document complained that GoSS is pushing the Bari “forcefully embrace tribalism (rather) than nationalism.” In this context the word tribalism connotes not necessarily an endorsement of tribal forms of political organisation, but a rejection of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, the former rebel cadres who sought to push their influence and agenda beyond the movement’s Dinka base, rejecting tribal divisions.
According to Lado, members of the Bari community met together in Khartoum State at Takamul on December 13, including Bari Chiefs, politicians belonging to various political parties both in government and out of government, university lecturers, women, youth and Bari Elders. They were joined by the chief of the neighbouring Lokoya people, Augustino Tombe.
The Bari claimed that the Government of Southern Sudan had used legal instruments to grab 70% of the entire land mass of Central Equatoria State and participated in the systematic armed robbery of Bari community property such as livestock.
They also pointed to government corruption and its failure to protect Bari citizens from five murders per day in and around Juba.
The Bari spokesman said that the community is “being made to resort to force and violence to enforce its rights.”
GOSS was established in 2005 in the wake of a landmark peace agreement between the Khartoum-based government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, which fought the ruling Islamist dictatorship and its predecessors for 22 years.

Exactly Mr Philip Lado, the people of Greater Equatoria must not believe in peace when they are in pain. This cruel government of dinka must remove his title of CAPITAL from any part of Greater Equatoria and take it to their jungle states. We cannot allow city in our region when our people are been pushed out of their respective areas by force, even some got murder. Killing, corruption, lying, violent, triblism and barbaric act is a strong culture of this government and his background general. It is unwise to see a nomadic who used to shout on his cattle bringing that voice to rule with others, it is unhealth and stupid if we are to think logically. They are addicted to Greater Equatorians foods becuase none of them has ever known vegetables foods, but no room for them to continue the joy that they are enjoying in this civilised State of Greater Equatoria.
Since the signed of CPA in 2005 up to date we have seem that the percentage of crimes committed by a particular tribe of dinkas in Greater Equatoria have increase beyond. Beside some of the minor and old crimes. The major precarious areas under dinkas threat at the moment are Nimule 50%, Juba 35%, Torit 9% and Yei 6%. All this crimes have been ignore by savage Kiir who claim himself as a ruler, controller and a man who is in charge of this country. Any Equatorian who believe in this cruel government of dinkas whether his daughter, sister and cousin is marriaged to sadist, unhealth, uncivilised and barbaric actor of dinkas would be call an idiot and foolish.
Enough is enough of this nuisance tribe. There will be a time when the dirty mouths of dinkas will be lock with a strong padlock from China, and their ugly skinny body will be turned into ash mix with cement which will be used build a historic house for people of South Sudan. If you don’t improve the way your dirty mouths are always talking and the way your ugly skinny bodies are acting then there is a single time for you arab salves. If I could have this 5 cm teeth of dinkas i would have perform maricel for the people of South Sudan toward this nasty tribe. I would expect to eat a dinka man infront of public as an individual mood toward this unwanted and most of the worse tribe in this world.
Moreover, I will respect my anus more then you dinkas, because she is useful to me more than the way you act, beside her function of helping me to release with waste materials still she is there as a part of my body and makes me look handsome and kind. I don’t think that you will earn any credit from me for 500 years. Because you dinkas your dirty and you remain dirty. The only solution to anything dirty is rubbish bin. I LOVE my nation and all my people, but am not into their barbaric behaviours. Respect yourself, show love, tolerance and willingness so that the people can respect you, and this is what am expecting from jugnlese (dinka). NO RESPECT NO ROOM
PACK AND LEAVE BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE
Logic have come to approve James as an adopted child to murle from Equatorian, when his parents were taking the courage of saving the dinkas from arabs. If James shows some respect he will be allowed to graze his cattle in Logic’s territory in summar.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your comments anyway, whatever one thinks is the solution to the problem.
First of all, I wanted to point out to our Equatorians that those of you who think Dinkas or any other tribe are the problem to you are singing tenuous, untenable, and specious complaints or claims. Hence, those who comment accordingly, for example, Mr. Illogic, are doing a disservice to their communities. Take it seriously.
Second, the issue of land grabbing is not a tribal issue but it is an “administrative” issue as another commentator said already. So, talk to those representing you in your constituencies; they may bring a change you long for if anyway at all.
Third, if you were to think intellectually, you should have known that there is a big difference between a private land and public land. Hence, each of us has a right to his or her land. If your land is “grabbed” as most of you termed it, you should resort to “judicial resolution” of the problem, as is the reason we have the hierarchy of Local Courts, State Courts to the “Supreme Court” of Southern Sudan with definitive jurisdictions; accordingly, each one of us shall bring a case either as individual or community.
Forth, it is really ironical that those who claimed the “grabing” of their land are living in Khartoum with our common enemy and yet they failed to realize that the land they live in Khartoum isn`t their land if the complaint of land grabbing is the issue in question.
Finally, I hope not all Equatorians are making the presence of the Southern Sudan Capital in their State a problem. Let us be objective in our judgements and try to avoid subjectivities that driven our thoughts always with the tribalism initially in our hands. Let us think as nationalists than tribalists. Nationalists will always remain nationalists and tribalists will always remain tribalist.
By the way, you have a right to your thoguhts but don`t let them overstep or touch the tip of another`s nose. Hence, thanks for your comments but let us always be cautious with our very words we spit out in fury. Overemotionality is not the solution but dialogue is the best solution if any at all.
Thanks
