RSF chief pledges unity, civilian poweramid Sudan’s 21-month war
January 1, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo on Monday vowed to maintain Sudan’s unity and transition to civilian rule, even as the war with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) entered its 21st month.
In an audio message, Daglo countered calls from some within the anti-war Tagadum bloc to form a separate government in RSF-controlled areas. He stressed the RSF’s commitment to “the unity of Sudan, its land and people” and envisioned a “new Sudan” based on “freedom, justice, and peace” under a democratic system.
Daglo rejected any future discrimination based on “religion, region, culture, or ethnicity.” He said the RSF does not aim to replace the SAF but proposed establishing a new, professional army under civilian oversight.
His message comes as SAF leaders rejected negotiations with the RSF, insisting on the paramilitary force’s dissolution and the integration of its Sudanese members into the army.
Daglo also addressed concerns about lawlessness in RSF-held areas, expressing “deep sorrow and grief for the violations that have occurred.” He pledged to intensify efforts to “control the outlaws” and hold them accountable.
“The outlaws are our enemy, just like the enemy we have been fighting since April 15th, 2023” Daglo said, renewing orders to RSF forces to protect civilians and secure property.
However, observers point to recent attacks against civilians in Al-Jazirah state, allegedly by RSF fighters after one of their local commanders defected to the army. This raises questions about Daglo’s ability to control his forces and ensure civilian protection.
