Nine rape victims undergo abortions in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state – doctors
January 5, 2025 (WAD MADANI) – Nine women who were raped during recent violence in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state have undergone abortions, the Steering Committee for the Sudanese Doctors’ Union said on Sunday.
The rapes occurred during attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on villages in eastern Al Jazirah in October, the committee said.
Among the victims were two medical workers who were kidnapped from a hospital, Adiba Ibrahim al-Sayed, a member of the committee, told Sudan Tribune.
She did not name the hospital where the abortions were performed or the area where the kidnappings and rapes took place for fear of reprisals against the victims.
The RSF has been accused of widespread abuses, including rape since the conflict erupted in Sudan in April between the paramilitary force and the army.
Last week, the Al Jazirah Conference, a civilian group, submitted a protest note to international and regional organizations about RSF abuses in Al Jazirah.
It called for the RSF’s leaders to be classified as war criminals and prosecuted by international justice.
