Iran to develop electric power in Sudan
December 28, 2008 (TEHERAN) –Iran has pledged to cooperate in the development of electric power in Sudan, an Iranian minister announced today after a meeting with the visiting Sudanese minister of Energy and mining in Teheran.
Iranian Minister of Energy, Parviz Fattah, Sunday said that he discussed with his Sudanese counterpart, Zubair Ahmed Al-Hassan, the development of electricity sector in Sudan and expressed the readiness of his country to participate in these projects.
He further mentioned that Iranian firms are already present in Sudan and building some power hydroelectric plants in the country.
The Sudanese minister said Sudan has great potential for the development of hydroelectric stations. He further said that Sudan wants to make use of ran’s expertise in this field.
Al-Hassan added that Sudan was also seeking cooperation from India, Malaysia, and China in the field of electricity.
Sudan has begun the modernisation and construction of several dams in the northern, center and southern Sudan to implement huge agriculture projects in the country mostly financed by Arab funds.
Since 2003, Sudan and Iran signed a number of cooperation agreements in the fields of agriculture, trade, industry economic, cultural and technical cooperation. During a visit of the president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Khartoum in February 2007, the two countries also agreed to enhance environmental cooperation as well as industrial and mine cooperation.
