Agaar community leaders consult on peace in three counties

By Manyang Mayom

December 31, 2008 (RUMBEK) — Three counties of Lakes state, Rumbek
East, Rumbek North and Rumbek Central, are holding peace consultations
in their respective villages, boma and payam until later on the
consultations move to the county level, after which all three counties
will read out their resolutions at the state level before January 4,
2009.

The consultations peace initiative was envisioned as a rood map to
clear all grievances of inter-clan fighting in the areas of Agaar
community.

All Agaar intellectuals–including three county chiefs, youth, Gelweng
militia leaders and top government officials from the government of
Southern Sudan–are involved in this serious peace consultation.

The consultations are facilitated by local chiefs with support from
the government of Southern Sudan and in conjunction with the state
government of Lakes state headed by Lt.Gen Daniel Awet Akot.

Meanwhile, Lakes state is at risk of insecurity that is usually caused
by pastoralist of Lakes state: now in Wakou in the southern part of
Lakes state at least two people are reported to have been injured by
arrow shots, while in Aber, which is ten kilometers from Rumbek
central county, there are unknown groups who usually wear a mixed
military uniform hijacking cars and robbing the citizens’ properties.
But in Greater Yirol there is an atmosphere of peace.

Fruitful talks took place in Paloc Payam on Tuesday after a group of
youth accepted to be reconciled by their elders.

This is the third time Agaar communities are holding a peace
consultations meeting in Rumbek since the signing of the comprehensive
peace agreement (CPA) in 2005, a peace deal that ended a 22-years
civil war between the predominantly Christian south and the
predominantly Muslim north.

    Good Initiative!

Thanks to the Lakes State communities. This is one of the good initiatives of resolving social problems. If these types of efforts had been taken before in many communities that butcher themselves in Southern Sudan, many lives could have been saved.

The problems most of the times lie at the grassroots levels and should be dealt with through consultations with the people, the youths, the elders, and the local chieftancies (executive chiefs, sub-chiefs, group leaders, and other communal institutions).

Keep on trying it and you will see the benefits of this effort.
Let the people understand themselvs and and discover how violence should simply be solved if people have respect and understanding of themselves.

    Happy a new year.
