Sudan president calls on political parties to ready for elections

January 1, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir urged political parties to prepare for the upcoming general elections promising that they will be conducted in a “fair” manner.

Al-Bashir speaking during the Independence Day show appealed to the electoral commission to speed up setting up a timetable for holding the elections.

“We call on all political powers to get ready for next phase; the phase of going back to the people. Renewing the mandate to rule the country through fair and free elections” Al-Bashir said.

“We reiterate our commitment to double efforts to create all the necessary requirements for that and clearing all difficulties that come in the way” he added.

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) which is signed on January 9 2005 between the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) calls for elections no later than July 2009 as part of a democratic transition in the country.

But last November a UN consultative team of experts advised the semi-autonomous southern Sudan government to postpone the next year general elections to November 2009 till the end of rainy season in order to avoid the logistical complications.

The NCP however insisted that there would be no delay in elections.

The Sudanese president vowed to conduct a foreign policy based on “trying to befriend all countries and strengthening relations particularly African neighbors including brothers in Chad”.

He further thanked a number of countries for investing in his country including China, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, Syria, Turkey, Malaysia, Iran and South Africa.

Reuters reported that the military parade held this year was described as a show of strength aimed at critics supporting a war crimes case against its president and Darfur rebels threatening more attacks.

Diplomats attending the parade told Reuters they saw several missiles and Iranian multi-barreled rocket launchers.

Four jet planes that flew over the crowd were said by the official announcer at the show to be Sukhoi Su-25s which were added to the air force in 2008. Diplomats said the Su-25, also known as the “Frogfoot”, was first developed in Russia.

In mid-July the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Luis Moreno- Ocampo filed 10 charges: three counts of genocide, five of crimes against humanity and two of murder and accused Al-Bashir of masterminding a campaign to get rid of the African tribes in Darfur; Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa.

The ICC judges are still reviewing the evidence before making a ruling that could come as early as in a few weeks.

“On Sudan’s Independence Day, we reject any parties that want to target Sudan’s independence. We warn any enemies who want to target the independence and unity of Sudan” Al-Bashir said.

In late December the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) warned of imminent attack on the positions of the Sudanese government.

On May 10 JEM launched an attack on Omdurman, the twin city of the capital Khartoum. More than 222 people were killed in this raid.

The assault caused embarrassed the Sudanese government and its military. Sudanese lawmakers lashed out at the defense minister calling on him to resign.

Beshir knows that he will win the election by all means even if he gets only 3% of the total votes casted. The election will never be fair and so Abel Alier will simply be instructed by his boss Omar Bashir to just declare him the winner and that is all!

    Mr. president,

The urgent need for the Sudan at the moment is not election, but your immediate resingnation and stand before the ICC to clear away all allegations and unjust charges made up against your kind personality. It’s all what the nation needs to heal its wounds and avoid total collapse. If you really love Sudan and its people then please do so.

    ‘Elections free and fair’,REALLY???

if you could measure NCP’S popularity across the country/counties,it is really pitiful, but what really motivates NCP’s position to WIN the elections if truely it is going to be free and fair?
and are the respected sudanese citizen willing and ready to once again ruled by an indicted head of state? HE won’t travel to any country and no any respected president would ever talk to the sudan president, once his presidency is reinstated by all means, the best the NCP could do is to nominate a new candidate for elections may be that would gather some sympathies for the deadly unpopular party.
they should then call for the resignation of the indicted Al Bashir.if they don’t do this, then they are not ready to transform the country democratically and anything term as ‘free and fair’is just a lip service.

    thnx

Goosh! That’s just the worries of election fever that prompted that Giggs to calm down the loaded anger from his opponent. We Southerners should not be blindfolded by that gimmick crook tinting himself when the touch-down for election is around the corner. Ghrrrh! Can we people ask ourselves, what sort of president is that dressing himself with military uniform as if he is ready to launch an attach to the enemies? Not only that, what important does the present of missiles and the Russian bribed Jet does flying overhead the citizen if at all he addressed the concern Nothern citizen? Oops! I almost forgets this. Did I just read that the speech was deliver in the military area? Mr. Beshir should not pretend to be a good buddy at the last minutes while surrounding himself with the military collections. Simply, that was just done to show us that, the war is not yet over. Anything can happen given the prsented facts of Iranian missiles and Russian weapon.
My fellow Southern, let be vegilent as the Northerners are planning unthinkable plan behind the scene. Let not be caught by supprise at this time, but be ready and willing to point fingers to where the smoke is coming from before the fire blast.

Your truly words are right …Firstly, I can agree with Mr. Freedom, that the current priority for NCP must be the top issues in their political agenda. Just imagine people are dying, while others thinking the elections. You know guys we can’t surprise for something that is easily to be understood .It is not just a kind of propaganda, so than let us take it seriously, as long as we have been struggling for our freedom, dignity, privileges and basic services. I don’t wanna go deeply..Some body can say whey?
Let us keep await for NCP‘s long terms strategies to remain in power. A new days have come in a right time, so we will see how Shiak AL bashair going to win.The only exist for those criminals is : They have feel sorry and submit their resignations People of Sudan .
