Sudan SPLM discussed asking Bashir to step down: report

January 4, 2009 (PARIS) – The southern Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) contemplated urging president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir to step down in the event of the issuance of an arrest warrant, a newspaper reported today.

The London based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat quoting unidentified SPLM officials said a meeting was held to discuss options should Al-Bashir be formally charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In mid-July the ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno- Ocampo filed 10 charges against Al-Bashir: three counts of genocide, five of crimes against humanity and two of murder and accused the Sudanese president of masterminding a campaign to get rid of the African tribes in Darfur; Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa.

The ICC judges are believed to be in the process of issuing a decision before the end of the month.

The SPLM officials said that Salva Kiir’s visit to Washington will carry their vision on a post-arrest warrant future during talks with US officials.

They further said that the proposal asking Bashir to resign has triggered divisions during the meeting on the grounds that such a request may cause the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) to dissolve the government of national unity effectively suspending the Comprehensive Agreement (CPA).

NCP officials have both publicly and privately blasted the SPLM for calling on Sudan to deal with the ICC.

Sudan’s foreign minister Deng Alor who is an SPLM figure came under fierce attack from pro-government columnists and NCP lawmakers for echoing his movement’s call on missions abroad.

The Sudanese government rejected the ICC jurisdiction over Darfur war crimes saying its judiciary is capable of prosecuting any criminals.

Sudan’s 2nd Vice President Ali Osman Taha leaders of civil servants today that Ocampo’s allegations aim at “creating anarchy in the country and sabotaging the development process”.

In March 2005 the UN Security Council (UNSC) invoked its power referring the situation in Darfur to the ICC despite Sudan being a non-State party to the Rome Statute.

With the ICC pressure, the tension is high, there’s no question about it, Bashir himself admit to step down if it’s in the Sudanese people’s will.

Sad am Hussein psychological nightmare are not that far from that assessment.
    Read between the lines.

In my opinion, Albashir has decided not to proceed with implementation of the CPA not recently, but long time ago right after the death of Dr. Garang. He does talks about an attractive unity and the referendum of the South in 2011 only to fool SPLM officials as he did with Dr. Riek & Dr. Lam from 1990 – 2001. Now, look where is the referendum bill which was suppose to be passed by the parliament in Khartoum in December 08. Where is the border of the South. Why did they back off from Abeyi protecol. I think SPLM should ask Albashir to step down in event of an arrest warrant, and if he behaves foolishly then SPLM should withdraw from government of national unity and declare an independence of the South from parliament in Juba.

    Mr.Logic

Mind your business or you will be pinned down very soon if you don’t stop insulting great warriors of Murle.

You get to remember that, went many Equatorians were mistreated by Arab 2003, it was Murle who freed you from that slavery. None of you were speaking regardles of all those tribes. So remember 2003, find out what your men Murle did in Juba to save you in that year. Than question yourselve that, when am I become man to talk to Murle?

In south Sudan, we know only Nuer, Taposa and may be some Dinkas not you, With except of other Murle speakers like Boya and Didinga.

Please don’t let me say bad stuff to you and your fearful people.

I hope you find it out.

    God bless

It is a turnout to the new Sudan!!!

His Excellency VP Mr. Kiir’s visit to US at this crucial time of office handover for President Obama to get in and X-President Bush leave out has many meanings. Mr. Bush is going to give VP Kiir his 10 commands. I think he will take but when he tends to say goodbye he will leave them on the table. That is the wise thing VP can do because he already satisfied with what Mr. Bush has done to the world and no need for his legacy be taken by any man said to be wise.

As for what he can do in P. Obama’s Office I can’t foretell but I am sure it will be for the welfare of Sudan. Secure the CPA, dismiss of ICC issue, settlement of peace in Darfur, and open new page or horizons in USA-Sudan relations. We need our diplomatic relations with US be more positive and on the right path. Sudan is very important to the US as USA is important to world peace. The world peace got jeopardized in the past 2 decades and Sudan to go on chaos as planned for by administration of Mr. Bush will not help and has a lot of complications to ad. However Sudan has a lot of homework, there are small secret buttons for US has to know how to rotate to let mutual relations function well.

As we are approaching a very critical period in different aspect, politically, diplomatically, economically, as far as recently world in a financial crises,Meanwhile, NCP is taking country‘s money by recruiting what called border forces, than indirectly they just transfer these money for the election preparations. We need to rebuild this country for next generations. So what??? Since Sudan has been worse in relationship with other countries, who do you think to regain diplomatic relations …It is time for rehabilitation, so let us keep scrutinizing not to be in a tension …Yes we don’t need to put ourselves in such position ,is only for those criminals to deserve that. So, who suppose to meet with US administration??? And %50 of NCP were on the list, so than let SPLM together with active parties to engage in any political or economic sanctions and diplomatic effort.
With regard to CPA, as %100 of NCP willing to suspend the implementation of to be done, in accordance with stipulated articles .I think SPLM should focus on very significant pending issues to come up with a plan (B) to protect SUDAN particularly DAR FUR and Abyi .What is that ??? ELECTION or what??? NONON this War.
    (God be with Sudan)

AL BASHIR’S RESIGNATION IS A SHORT CUT TO SOLVING SUDAN TROUBLES!!!!!!!

Sudanese will benefit more if ALbashir humble himself and honestly resign without any hot feelings.
He is believed to be the architect of the west, south, north east and central sudan current and past problems.
SPLM should not coil back their legs to boldly deliver the proposal, eagerly awaited by sudanese masses.
No one is expected to do this partriotic move Except SPLM.

if president Bashir resigns now,we shall consider him patriotic and ”a hero of peace”

    thnx
