Lost Boys of Sudan honor Jonglei Governor

By Philip Thon Aleu

January 5, 2009 (BOR TOWN) — Southern Sudanese living in the United States of America – popularly known as the Lost Boys of the Sudan, honored the Governor of Jonglei State, Kuol Manyang Juuk, for his decision to send them to schools in 1980s.

Gov. Kuol Manyang hailed the group too for completing the mission and honoring him. “I am proud and thankful to our young people who are in America,” he told reporters witnessing the ceremony at his office here on Monday.

The certificate of achievements was handed over by Wel Mayom Jok – a lost boy on family’s visit from North Carolina (NC). Jok said the decision to honor Manyang is expression of gratitude and change in behaviors. “Those days, people use not to say ‘thank you’ but this is the only thing we can do to this man (Gov. Kuol),” he said.

Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk, a native of Bor, used his authority and influence in Bor community in 1987 to send thousands of children to Ethiopia to attain basic education. The children doubled as soldiers known as ‘Jec Amer (Red Army)’ and school pupils in Panyuduk before being displaced back to Southern Sudan and further to Kenya following the overthrow of Mengistu’s regime in Ethiopia early in 1990s. While in Kakuma refugee camp, the young men – now relieved from burden of serving as child soldiers, remained in groups known as ‘minors.’

Following the resettlement of the boys to the USA, Americans coiled the term “Lost Boys” to referring this group of children staying in wildness without parents.

Majority of the Lost Boys are from Jonglei State and a good number from Greater Bor Counties of Duk, Twic East and Bor. Jok said his team in NC yield the idea to award Gov. Kuol and have the backing of all colleagues.

Acknowledging the honor, Gov. Kuol said he “receive this award on behave of the all people of Sudan” and call upon the young people to take over responsibilities in Southern Sudan. “I expect them to come and take responsibilities of this Country,” he said referring to Southern Sudan controlled by former rebel’s party the SPLM.

Honour to H E Kuol Manyang de JUUk Chau, the governor of Jonglei, and not to forget HIS Excellency the late Former President and the first president of South Sudan in history, the current president Salva kiir Mayardit and all comrades in southern sudan.
It is my pleasure to have read that the lost boys of sudan residing in United State of America have presented a certificate of achievements to Governor Kuol Manyang, it’s always pleasing when one achieved the goal that he himself set, and always sat when one failed his goal. Today majority of young boys living abroad have accomplished their educattion and they can not come back soon because once they come, they are being looked at with deadly eyes, some of them are put death for no reason at all, and if you ask people they will only tell you that there is no development going on, on the ground, How do one expect development when they are targeting those who are legible to develop the country? are we still relying on white people to do every thing for us, USA was developed by its citizens, and likewise to Canada, Australia, UK and so many more, these mentioned Countries weren’t developed with hatred but by loving one an other as citizens of the same nation.
Now I am appealing to all South Sudan citizeens to love one an other, work together, treat ourselves equally and then the development that we are hunting for will come to our country. We are reach, we got everything that a country need for its development.

My last but not the less is that, I am thanking Kuol Manyang for accepting that certificate for the name of sudanese in General though some people are trying to claim their majority amongst the lost boys of Sudan, the knowledge that one got is for Southern Sudan, let’s use it regardless of tribe. thanks

I also condemn youngdinka on writting in such a bulgar words. you need to respect one another and use this site on promoting common grown through peace, tranquility, respect and honor.

I know this one thing:- If it WAS NOT A DINKA MIND, ALL NUERS LOST BOYS IN NEBRASKA AND ALASKA WOULD HAVE NOT FOUND REFUGE IN AMERICA.

also why is it that it is A DINKA MAN WHO THOUGHT OF HONORING SOUTH SUDAN OFFICIAL and not any NUER ( it is becuase not that nuers have no respected leaders but Majority of NUERs rely on RIAK MACHAR who is a TRAITOR to people of SOUTH SUDAN.

there is no any southern sudanese who trust RIAK MACHAR for democratic leadership BUT ONLY HIS NUER MAJORITY people.

    thank you friends.

I am proud of you Wel Jok for the good job you have done with your other colleagues who supported this idea. Even though I was not in that group who brought up this idea, I am with you now because Kuol Manyang’s idea has helped those children who were not meant to be educated like myself. I am encouraging people like you to support more ideas that are bound for southern Sudan, but not yet were supported with material money. The next phase for the Lost Boys/Girls of Sudan will be to help in the development and peace building. I thanked you Gov. Kuol personally for accepting this certificate of Achievement for our cause and in the name of Sudan. Let go jec Amer.

    Hello Lost Boys,

To be honest with you, thanking Kuol Manyang Juuk, by the lost boys (former Red Army survivors) is like surviving sheep thanking a bad sheperd for luring them into a field of hyenas. The man was not ashamed to follow late Garang’s tactics by luring the children into the army in the name of taking them to school. That did not happen, instead of holding pens and books, the children were given AK-47s. They were butchered helplessly as human shielf to Jalaba. The survivors had to decide by themselves to quit and join all those adult cowards in refugee camps. I wondered whether the children of Kuol Manyang and John Garang were among the fighters used as human shielf on the frontline. But I used to be there and couldn’t hear of Mabior or Achol any where in the fighting field. So, guys, it was Dr. Riek Machar in 1991 who you should thank for condeming child soldiers and releasing the group that found itself in his faction to school. Then those on Garang’s side were just given the green light recently in 2000 to present. Don’t honor the wrong person whom you ran away from his determination to continue using you as human shield!!! Unless you are dumb in US with dead minds that cannot think better any more. But if you are just the Bor component of the Lost Boys and not the Lost Boys of the South in general, than I would easily understand your motive!!!!

This article proved that the so call Lost Boys of Sudan were never displaced by the government of Sudan but left alone. Now, Lost Boys stop accusing the Sudane government, tell the truth in America. You were abducted by your own Kuol Manyang.

Kuol need to be brought to justice for using child soldier during the war.

It is cold child abduction and kidnapping. These charges will brought against kuol; kidnapping, abduction of children without consultation with parents, conspiracy of lying to the children that they were going to go school but instead they were going to be used as shields, preaching wrong information to the parents, and killer.

This issue will be raise at Hague. Your master will answer to these questions in front of the court and he will be punish for it.
