Sudanese Communist Party to hold its 5th convention

January 7, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — The Central Committee of the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) today announced that it would hold the long time awaited fifth convention on January 24.

A leading member in the party, Suleiman Hamid, said the opening session of the convention will take place in the Friendship Hall in Khartoum. However he didn’t elaborate on the agenda of the convention or its time frame.

He pointed out that all the sections of the party, inside the country and abroad, have elected their delegates to the convention.

Mohamed Ibrahim Nugud, the SCP Secretary General will address the opening session and he would be followed by the presentation of the political report.

The fifth convention comes more than forty year since the fourth convention in 1967. The conference has to adopt a new programme and constitution.

The convention which is held on the eve of general elections in the country is expected to discuss crucial issues such as the transformation of the party to a social-democrat force with the change of SCP name. However, the old guard still rules the party a conflict of generation could emerge in the convention.
