China to drill ten water wells in South Darfur

January 8, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – Chinese companies will begin drilling of ten water wells in South Darfur State, according to a deal signed in Khartoum today in presence of the visiting Chinese envoy for Darfur.

The wells are part of development assistance projects provided by the Chinese government to the arid war torn region.

The agreement was signed Thursday by Chinese Ambassador to Sudan, Li Chengwen, and Sudanese Commissioner for the Humanitarian Assistance Affairs, Hasbu Mohamed Abdellah. The signing ceremony was attended by Liu Guijin, the special representative of the Chinese government for Darfur.

The Chinese firms have already achieved the exploration operations while drilling, and assembling pumps and water tanks are expected to be completed in a short period, the embassy said.

The Sudanese official thanked the Chinese government for the valuable assistance and added that the Chinese aid and development projects play an important role for the return of the displaced Darfuri to their home.

The Chinese envoy, Liu Guijin, pledged that his government would provide more concrete development assistance to the war ravaged region. He also hailed efforts exerted by the Sudanese government to achieve peace there.
