Eritrea acts to destabilize Sudan and Yemen, helps Sudanese opposition: report

KHARTOUM, March 23, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — A dissident Eritrean political leader form the Eritrean ruling People’s Front For Democracy and Justice (PFDJ’s) claimed a dangerous plot has been organized by influential leaders within the Eritrean regime against Yemen and Sudan, the Sudan Media Centre said.

The unnamed dissident revealed that Eritrea asked Sudanese Communist elements residing in Yemen to perpetrate acts of sabotage in the Yemenites towns of Aljedida and Aden to destabilize the Red Sea region for the benefit of Eritrean interests.

The source added that another cell made up of Sudanese Communists and members of the Popular Front “will carry out acts of violence in Sudan to waste the ongoing festivities of peace to deteriorate the image of Sudan before the IGAD intermediaries and the United States.”

The source indicated that coordination took place lately between Asmara and the Sudanese Communist Party “since a high delegation of the Sudanese Communist Party was currently in Asmara.” The delegation was engaged in intense negotiations along with dimensions chaired by the secretary-general of the ruling PFDJ’s.

On the other hand, Eritrean authorities allow Sudanese opposition forces and Darfur rebels to establish new camps within its territories, said an Eritrean opponent.

Speaking to SMC, Yunanis Qambihir [transliterated name] said the Eritrean authorities “have allowed Darfur rebels living in its territories to establish camps in Sitma, Tabah, Dambayin and Tambakib [transliterated places] to launch attacks against certain regions of the southern Kassala State in Eastern Sudan.”

Yunanis said “the authorities want to exploit Darfur rebels to implement its plans, which are aimed at destabilising the Sudanese government.”

He further affirmed, the Eritrean government “hosts Sudanese rebels and supports them financially to implement its plans through the opposition.”

Sudan and Eritrea have mutually launched charges of carrying out subversive acts or terrorism. Last month Eritrea accused, Sudan was behind blasts at the Hashferai Hotel in the Tesney town of Eritrea close to the Sudanese-Eritrean border.

Sudan harbours different Eritrean opposition parties.
