South Sudan women threaten to not vote for male contenders

January 9, 2008 (JUBA) — The representative of Central Equatoria state women, today, threatened to not vote for male contenders during the upcoming general elections. She was speaking during the CPA celebration here.
Mrs. Joyce Keji Raphale accused the southern Sudan officials of being selfish and not wanting to fully implement the twenty five per cent share of positions automatically granted to women by late Dr. John Garang de Mabior during the first national convention of SPLM held at Kapoeta county of Eastern Equatoria state.
Speaking on behalf of females at the colorful occasion marking four years of CPA existence at Garang’s mausoleum in Juba, under the theme: Freedom, Prosperity and Peace for All, Mrs. Joyce Keji Raphale, Deputy Chairperson of Women’s Affairs in Central Equatoria state, complained that women suffer exploitation and marginalization at the hands of South Sudan cabinet ministers
Nevertheless, the acting Governor of Central Equatoria state, Dr. Manaseh Lomule appealed to women to forgive men and vote for them during the coming crucial general elections and assured the crowd that Central Equatoria is working for unity of all Southern Sudanese till the conduction of a referendum in the year 2011 to determine whether there will be unity or separation of the South from northern Sudan.
Sudan’s new electoral law grants women 25 percent of the seats in parliament and introduces proportional representation by enshrining quotas for political parties in what has been billed as a road towards democratic transformation. The law does not prohibit women for contesting more than this proportion.
Southern women played a significant role in the war, fighting and supporting the multiple armed groups.
Regarding insecurity in Juba, Lomule directed commissioner of Juba County to stop all foreign chiefs operating in Juba County who have become a source of land grabbing and rampant insecurity in metropolitan city.
However, a representative of National Congress Party (NCP), Musa Loku emphasized that southern Sudan government has failed to construct roads in Juba town including implementation of economic development in South Sudan to present.
Earlier the Bari community chief Danish Turmatalo said land grabbing by Dinka and Nuer in Juba has become a greater source of insecurity for young Equatorians who are being eliminated on a daily basis by soldiers claiming to be SPLA.
Despite the odds, chief Turmatalo appealed for unity of all Southern Sudanese especially during the coming general election and referendum in 2011 to determine the future of South Sudan democratically.

To South Sudan women,
Boycotting vote during election is not a good approach and would not either help you obtained your 25% positions in the government of south sudan os Sudan. I think it was reaction from one woman but was not a better weapon that most women wanted to use against their partners (men) to achieve their goals. We all were in struggle to free ourselves from the North and therefore, we should not possessed those kinds of diverse interests to disintegrate ourselves. It can be good we think back to previous years when women have no any percentage to present themselves in the pursue of happiness or running the goverment affairs as some men do. The Government of South sudan is the only way to free and to involve all marginalized Sudanese people to serve and enjoy the Sudan wealth equally. Women, please you have a right to claim and fight for your portion of 25% positions that has not been given to you by any states but not to the to the government of South Sudan or Sudan as a whole.
