UNMIS engineers clear roads in Bor

January 16, 2009 (BOR) — Under the aegis of United Nation Mission in Sudan – UNMIS, 5 Construction Engineer Company (CEC) has carried out numerous community services in Bor Town, the UN agency said in a press statement here Friday.

The team of 5 CEC, led by Lt. Col. LJ Singh under the guidance of Col Sameer Bhadauria, Sector Cdr, Sector III (both in Malakal) intercepts to helping local communities in Jonglei capital in constructing roads and erecting facilities for the returnees when conditions prove unbearable, the statement said.

“The roads in Bor town had become untenable due to torrential rains and at places the roads were washed away due to floods. To alleviate the local population of their hardship, Lt J Parthasarathy, OIC, 5 CEC detachment at Bor undertook the task of repair/ widening of roads,” the press release read in parts.

5 CEC is an India firm. It is not the first time India army serving in maintenance of comprehensive peace agreement in Bor Town intervened to assist local community. On December 1, 2008, India veterinary doctors launched a four day animal vaccination, reaching out to over four (4000) thousands cattle on December 4.

Roads in the densely populated suburbs of Bor town are in poor state thus newly surveyed areas of residence are quit OK. Recently 5 CEC in Bor has not only repaired but also widened more than 500m of road near Bor civil Hospital and 200m road near Bor market (Marol). The company, in collaboration with UNMIS “also carried out extensive repairs of dykes in Bor town which were damaged in the recent flash floods.”

5 CEC also claims in the statement that South Sudan Ministry of Physical Infrastructure has appreciated their moves. In a show of happiness to the on current development by UNMIS, locals in Bor Town gather to watch the clearing of roads which may reduce holes and thorns within the vicinity of the houses.
