Sudan SPLM urges ruling NCP to cooperate with ICC
January 21, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — Southern Sudan’s main political power yesterday called on the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to avoid confrontation with the international community.
The Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) which concluded its political bureau meeting in Juba, urged the NCP to exercise “patience and prudence” when tackling the ICC crisis.
The London based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat quoted the SPLM spokesperson Ben Mathew as saying that the political bureau established a committee to review the situation in light of the developments following refusal of the NCP to deal with The Hague based court.
Sudan is bracing for a decision by the ICC judges on a ten counts presented by prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo last July against president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir. A ruling is expected in the coming weeks.
SPLM chairman Salva Kiir has recently warned that an arrest warrant “will impede implementation of North-South peace agreement, elections process, democratic transformation as well as complicating political, security and economic situation in the country”.
This month some media reports quoted Sudanese diplomats who said that Khartoum plans to impose emergency law and other measures that effectively suspend implementation of the North-South peace agreement signed in 2005.
But the SPLM spokesperson warned against imposing emergency law without their consent of as required by the constitution and the peace agreement.
The Sudanese presidential adviser Mustafa Ismail asked about the SPLM resolution said that any reaction by the NCP would be delayed until they receive it formally.
Ismail said that the country is at a stage trying to unite the “internal front” and as such “will refrain from media battles”.
Sudan has refused to accept the jurisdiction of the ICC despite a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution referring the Darfur situation to the court in March 2005 under Chapter VII.

What is the problem of SPLA/M with NCP, it is their business with ICC why should you rise your voice about their charges, just pray internal in your hearts that let ICC decide as soon as possible, so that people like Turabi can be released from jail.

Thank you for good work, and please let me just remind you with these few words; I remember Dr. John Garang was once asked by a journalist in Nairobi, Kenya in Janurary 2005 that what will you do if the NCP does not implement the CPA ??. Garang said, we’re going to Sudan and we will do the work that will make the price for choice of going back to the war higher than the price of implementation of the CPA.

Our approaches toward ICC should’ve been more political rather than being roared or mouthily fomented.
What one could understand is that, if we were required to contribute our decisions regarding the International Catch Criminals. Therefore, we could at least provide well researched information which significantly reflects our southern region identity. This information would hence base on current conditions faced by our respected citizens of South, West and the whole nation. There after, the world that is watching on Sudan will decide whether the case is lawful or unlawful.
If not, why don’t we take a deaf smile on this issue?
