Sudanese Communist expected to maintain their political orientation

January 23, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — The fifth convention of the Sudanese communist party will start on Saturday 24 January in Khartoum where the party is expected to recommit itself to defend the interest of the workers and sideline any idea for overture towards social democracy.

Ibrahim_Nugud.jpgFounded in 1946, under the name of the Sudanese Movement for National Liberation, the party adopted its current name in its third convention in October 1956. However, the issue of the transformation of the party to socialist party and its relationship with the workers undermined the party and had been the source of a number of dissidence.

Recruiting its members among new professionals, students and workers, the SCP failed to become a mass party but the party drew its strength from its links with the workers’ federations and mass organizations.

In a press conference held in Khartoum at the premises of its weekly newspaper Al-Midan, Al-Tigani Al-Tayeb, member of the SCP Central Committee, said the convention will gather some 500 delegates and will cost 600.000 Sudanese pounds.

He further pointed out that the first convention since 1967, date of the fourth congress, will devote the intellectual and organizational unity of the party, adding that it also would accomplish four major tasks: to adopt the political report, the program and the statues of the party in addition to the election of new leadership.

However in a paper published by Al-Midan about the proposed program to the fifth convention the party insists on the leading role of the SCP to defend workers’ interests and to invent new methods in this context.

Another report published in the latest issue of January 20, also excludes any change of the name of the party.

“A large group of members, cadres and even the friends of the party believe that the latter will not change its name by the end of the fifth convention,” says the news report which published in its first page.

“The Conference, which is attended by delegates from all sectors representing the SCP at home and abroad, would stick with the name of the party and will deliberate on other issues more important,” it added.

Sudanese Communist expected to maintain their political orientation
Sudanese Socialist Party considered one of the national movement leading factions in Sudan modern political history with direct contacts with Moscow former USSR. I have had a chance to join civil service with comrades in the early 80s to witness decency, high commitment, and self abidance with positive impressive presence always represented by SSP individuals in the core of the civil service. Despite party base smashed, main figures executed by P. Numairy in July 1972 bloody military coupe the survivors kept on showing high profile, restraint with good hope and confident in the future triumph.

Mr. Nugud coped to survive July massacre like the old fox knows when and show up or to hide he kept informative like a history book and with rumble of today he proved he is still the godfather custodian of the SSP legacy despite the long-term hibernation in his hideout.

We wish for SSP full success to take right position among Sudan major parties, able to play the awaited role in Sudan integrity and unity preserve and also helpful in ICC case as well as in permanent peace settlement in Darfur.
