Sudan accuses Chad of supporting recent JEM attacks in Darfur
January 29, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese government has accused Chad of providing military and logistical support to the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) rebels in its attack in South Darfur town and other locations earlier this month.
The State minister for information Kamal Obeid told the reporters yesterday that Chadian troops took part in recent attempt by JEM rebels to break out the encirclement of JEM troops in Muhageryia, South Darfur.
Chadian forces from the Republican Guard entered Darfur with supplies and ammunitions to lift the siege imposed by the Sudanese armed forces on JEM troops, the Sudanese official said.
The rebel JEM seized the dispute location on January 15, after clashes with former rebel Minni Minnawi fighters. Since town is besieged by the Sudanese army.
Obeid statements are the first official reaction since last Tuesday where the rebels said they clashed with the Sudanese army at 25 km from Muhageryia.
The Chadian government had accused Sudan on Monday of forming a new rebel alliance in Khartoum.
International and regional pressures led the two countries to resume their bilateral relations last November and to commit themselves to Tripoli and Dakar agreements in which Khartoum and N’djamena pledge to not provide any support to their opposition groups.
