SPLM declines responsibility of Malakal tribal clashes

January 31, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has dismissed accusation by the National Congress Party of fomenting the recent tribal clashes in Malakal during the celebrations of peace anniversary.

Gatluak_Deng_Shuluk_King.jpgPagan Amum said the SPLM could not be behind such tribal fighting because his party is against tribalism and works for peace and stability there through promoting unity of the southern Sudan people.

“The suspects are those people who want to bring conflict between the communities and are not supporting SPLM with good ideas,” he added.

Pagan’s statements come after accusations by the National Congress Party that SPLM members were behind the incidents to tarnish the image of the NCP and its popularity among the local population.

The governor of the Upper Nile State, Gatluak Deng Garang is the sole NCP appointed governor among the ten southern Sudan states.

Fighting between Dinka and Shilluk in Malakal on January 9, killed dozens of civilians and displaced more than 300 families after their homes were burned.

The deputy chairman of the NCP in the Upper Nile, Anang Agaw, said they had informed the secretary general Pagan Amum that some SPLM member in Malakal do not want the state government benefit from the political gains of the economic development achieved in the NCP led government in there.

Pagan said there is a tripartite committee from the national, south Sudan and Upper Nile governments to probe the causes of the tribal fighting. He also added that a reconciliation conference would be held in the state.

The two peace partners are set to take part in the first free general elections in the country since the signing of the Comprehensive ¨Peace Agreement on January 9, 2005.

TRIBALISM IN SOUTH SUDAN IS EQUAL TO TREASON
I condemn the Malakal incident by the strongest terms possible. Our people should unite no matter what political parties they support and what tribes they came from.I support the formation of investigation committee and culprits who started this barbaric act should be brought to book.NCP should cut short its mouth in the affairs of Upper Nile because when we become independent in two years,we will never meet with them (North).Gatluak Deng should ,in 2011, defect to any politcal party in the South.

I also condemn the criminal tribalists on this website. You guys are traitors in hearts becaue if you love South Sudan, you can not forment tribal hatred which always result in death of South Sudanese.

If there is anything that will always be painful,it is South Sudanese killing each other while the Northern Jellaba just laugh at them.I am calling everyone who blog on this website to encourage his/her relatives and friends to take the spirit of Nationhood above anything else.

Thank you Mr. Secretary Amum for seeing that, but before my comment I will say to those of Sudantribune web. Some fool, tribalists, particularly illogic, Gatweth and Kim Deng always possed dumb article on this sit and no one delet them while my response to their nonsence comments is always deleted. I thank Pagan for his hard work to bring our people under one voice. All northern parties and some fool within SPLM party are trying to divid our people for their own interest. If we are not aware of them and serious for their activities the south will be suffering and will not be different from Somalia. Whole south have been suffering in the hand of Arab and European for more than hundred years and we are going to forget it. We need unity to solve any difference among us rather than fighting. We can make our nation greater than any other African’s nation if we allow each other to do business wherever we want than self-interest or selfishness. Iam blaming southern leaders for their failure to bring people together than self-interest. They provide weak system, corruption and law without effective enforcement to protect civilians from killing each other. They don’t want to provide clean water for southern population. They also buy houses in abroad than building our giving land. They invest money outside and not opening bank inside the country. Those leaders are going to escape whenever we go back to war.

    Dear Jayo and Pandit,

Mr . Pagan Amum, as SPLM SG , did not attend the CPA Celebration in Malakal because, he knew that to have failed politically to organize very the constitunecy that should the election is held today, those peoples are the one that will make him to continue in his current post. The SG used to influence things during the late times,,and that where the root cuase the current event began. My advice is let the investigation team does it work. And the out come soon is SPLM alone……

South Sudan is up on smoke and that contradicts Mr. Amum’s claim that SPLM is working for peace and Unity in the South. SPLM makes noise of working for these principles and does nothing to Achieve them

Malakal issue was instigated by a few SPLM individuals including Pagan who have been singing the song of Malakal being owned by the Shilluks. The innocent Shilluk community was incited to be the first to enter the stadium with their Yai and not to allow the Ngok/Padang Dinka to enter first. When that was changed by the organizers, they started the clashes by disrupting Ngok from proceeding with their Yai. Because the Shilluks were armed with spears as they enetered stadium, it is right say this was planned. Several people including Nuers were injured as many know. As a result the Ngok Dinka clashed with Shilluk resident of Anakdiar leading to death of not more than ten from both sides. This figure was inflated by the enemies of Peace.

Anakdiar belongs to Ngok/Padang and so is any part of the East bank. The chief who allocated land to his in laws in Anakdiar and Banglai still has children around who know how it happened. The Shilluks know that very well. The reason for resistance is coz Malakal has become a big town and what Ngok/Padang wants is the right of land ownership

Mr.Amum was in Australia on 9/01/09. What peace and Unity was he preaching. When he came he rushed to Anakdiar and Banglai and threatened the Ngok community that they were not for SPLM because they clashed with his kins in Anakadiar. I thought Amum could embrace every tribe in the South and not just his tribe. How many communities clsahed this year and i have not heard Amum commenting or visiting. I don’t even think he could question the Ngok/Padang community’s commitments to SPLM as he knows how this community has stood with the movement from before 1983 till the signing of CPA. Not even one day have they turned to Arabs. Again, Ngok/Padang have never attacked any community in history and they only retaliate in self defense

The best Mr. sectretary could have done was to call for leaders from both sides inclding commissioners and get a peaceful way forward which is the only option. Amum has been in Malakal and he only talks to Shilluks and what others could read is that he has taken side

Frankly, South Sudan needs leadership. GoSS and SPLM are engaged in looting as they know sooner than later this Country will have financial crisis given the Current economic meltdown. That’s why the have businesses outside and all the big guns are the referers of this game

Look at the tribal clashes in Western Equatoria, Lakes, JOnglei (Nuer,Dinka, Murle) and last fourdays attack on Abwong (Baliet County) by raiders from Lou. Not many know exactly what’s happening on the ground and hence, no one reports it.Leaders of some communities raise things in the assemblies in favor of their tribes/clans. We are still to find a true leader who feels pain when a life is lost in the Uppernile when he comes from equatoria and also when life is lost from Equatoria, we are yet to find some one from Bahrelgazel/Uppernile to take it as his won problem

SPLM! Get the formula to cool the fire burning across South Sudan and stop barking. GoSS and SPLM are accountable to all ethnic clashes in the South because of their failure to take action

Amum: Don’t use your figure to incite Shilluk against Ngok/Padang, you are a national figure and what will make you great is geting a the right formula to solve the land issue rather going to Anakdiar/Banglai and shout at Ngok people. I was surprised of your actions and you surely did that as aPLM Shilluk but not Secretary General

I total disagree with individuals who make tribalist/abusive comments on this site. I also condemn all leaders including from my own community who incite violence and take side when it touches their communities. I am still waiting for a true South Sudanese leader who will never identify himself as this and that tribe

I agree with you all who are condemn the Malakal incident by the strongest terms possible. Our people can not unite because same of their relative are members in different party or a big boss in the government that always sent them wrong information about other parties.I also condemn the criminal tribalists on this website, and one day we will realize in this web, that we are all guilty for what we post or written in any web about south. If there is anything that will always be painful,it is South Sudanese killing each other while the Northern Jellaba just laugh at them.I am calling everyone who blog on this website to encourage his/her relatives and friends to take the spirit of Nationhood above anything else,
    thank
    God will be with southsudan.
