Eritrean president confers with Sudanese opposition leader

ASMARA, March 25, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The Eritrean President Isayas Afewerki yesterday held talks with the chairman of the Sudanese opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) of Sudan Mohamed Osman al-Mirghani, the Eritrean radio said.

During the meeting, both sides extensively discussed recent developments on the Sudanese peace process and in particular the Naivasha, Kenya, peace talks.

Al-Mirghani briefed President Isayas on his visit to Nairobi, Kenya, the Naivasha peace talks and his meeting with President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, who is also the current chairman of Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

President Afewerki said Eritrea would continue with its effort as ever before so that the Sudanese problem gets a comprehensive and lasting political solution.

He also reaffirmed that Eritrea would continue its cooperation with IGAD member countries and IGAD partners for the success of the Sudanese peace talks, especially the Naivasha, Kenya, peace talks.
