South Sudan legislators debate Malakal events with Upper Nile Governor

“The Sudanese Council of Minstries passed on 5th Feb 2009 the newChild Act =
and cancelled article 13 of the draft law which was banning andcriminilizin=
g female genital mutilation(FGM).=20
The Council of the Minstries
said this is against Islam and decided to legislate for what is called
Islamic type of FGM in the criminal act. The Child Act will now be
submitted to the Parliment . Human Rights Defender in Sudan are calling for=
support to stop
the steps for legislation for any type of FGM and regard this is as a
violation of human rights, violence against the girl -child and aginst
Sudan’s international legal committments and against the Sudanese
constitution.=20
The government steps came on the eve of the Zero tolerance
day for FGM,6th Feb “In a step which=A0is a serious set-back in the Sudan w=
ith regards to work tocriminalize FGM which is considerd as a part of Sudan=
national statigy for abolition of FGM in one generation.
Please take action to call for the legal protection of the rights of the gi=
rl-child and women in accordance with the international human rights=A0stan=
dards and the Sudanese constitution, and a clear governmental stand aginst =
all types of FGM.
