The Sudanese defense minister Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein said that Ban justified his request by “fears of civilian casualties and among the African Union-United Nations (UNAMID) peacekeepers in the area” the London based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported.

Khartoum has managed to retake the town of Muhajriya after days of clashes with Darfur Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), who seized the South Darfur strategic town on January 15.

However following calls from the UN, the African Union and the US JEM decided on February 3, to pull out its troops from the flashpoint town more than two weeks after driven out the former rebel fighters of Minni Minnawi.

Prior to the army attack Sudan asked UNAMID to withdraw from the town but the latter refused and insisted on maintaining a presence to protect civilians.

The Sudanese top military official said that Bashir reacted sharply to Ban’s request during their meeting on the sidelines of the African Union (AU) summit held this week in the Ethiopian capital.

“He [Bashir] told him [Ban] that we will eject JEM rebels and take control over it [Muhajriya] even if Ban went there himself and took refuge in UNAMID headquarters” Hussein said.

The UN humanitarian coordinator for Darfur said Thursday that at least 30,000 people have fled their homes recently in South Darfur while government forces attempted to re-take Muhajriya.
