Gun dealer detained in Sudan’s Lakes state

By Manyang Mayom

February 20, 2009 (KUACJOK, Lakes State) — A gun dealer was captured selling AK-47 type guns in the payam of Anuol, a distance of 34 miles from Yirol town, said the commissioner of Yirol West County, Agok Manyiel Dhieu.

arms_collected_in_Rumbek_022007.jpgDhieu affirmed that the gun dealer was captured last Monday while selling out ten guns, of which all are type AK-47, in addition to three boxes of bullets. Now he is under custody within Yirol West county central prisons facing serious questioning from county police authorities before his transfer to Lakes state correctional central prisons.

The firearms dealer is a citizen of Anuol Payam. According to the commissioner, the gun seller disclosed during questioning by police officials that he usually exported guns from Juba from an unknown source, which he did not explain, and that he delivered them to Anuol Payam, his own hometown.

The firearms seller said that he brought all ten guns for an attack that was prepared for a revenge, but the father whose son had been killed was refusing to undertake the revenge move. Then the Payam policemen discovered the speculations about organizing for the revenge attack. They immediately searched around and found the guns and seized them.

Anuol is a Payam of Yirol West county bordering Equatoria, particularly Mundri and Tali at the southward of Yirol West county town.

There was inter-clan fighting between two clans of Anuol Payam last week that resulted in the deaths of six people; the cause of fighting was repeated revenge attempts carried out by Ajong-kuak clan and Kuak clan. “The causes of all are cattle robbing by both groups of pastoralists of Anuol Payam,” said Dhieu.

Furthermore, two bodyguards belonging to the Commissioner of Yirol West county shot each other dead on February 5 in the same conflict zone in Anuol Payam where the two clans where holding gunfire exchange. The official said that the cause of dispute between the bodyguards was unclear as nobody questioned them and there was no one around found alive to explain what had led them to fight.

In December, Commissioner Agok Manyiel reflected on the experience of his two years in power during an interview with Sudan Tribune in Yirol West County, describing insecurity woes and challenges in education facing the county.

Yirol West County has been served by seven Payams that include Geer, Aluakluak, Anuol, Abang, Mapuordit, Genggeng and Yirol town payam, which is a distance of 75 miles away from Rumbek Central County. Manyiel said that two payams of Yirol West–Geer and Anuol–are indeed behind in education since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed in 2005.

In the war period Yirol was only one county but with the peace deal signed in 2005, it was divided into three counties that include Awerial, Yirol East and Yirol West.

Commissioner Agok Manyiel Dhieu was appointed on March 15, 2007 by the president of Southern Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit. He is the second commissioner since the Southern Sudan government was founded in 2005, replacing the former commissioner, Akec Maciek Yor.

    What???

Gun dealer(s) in Lakes state selling guns supplied by “unknown” sources in Juba, the capital? This is very, very serious!!! I can see the truth in the accusations labeled on SPLA senior officers and even some politicians as the main reason for killings among the civilians. How can we achieve disarmament of civilians if we can re-arm them ourselves in the South. GOSS leadership should take this very seriously, investigate the matter and apprehend the culprits right from Lakes state up to Juba. This could be true with those who accused Governor of Jonglei of supplying Bor Dinkas IDPs in Eastern Equatoria with guns, and even the accusation on Governor of Warrap state organizing and arming youth to terrorize other communities. GOSS should not ignore this.

I think that the disarming which the junglese were crying for is an opposite of importing more guns. This is crazy and it is really hard to deal with someone who had been brought up in jungle and knowing nothing about the important of peace. Unless there are some arabs in jungle states, but if not exactly then it is complicated to understand the future of those junglese (dinkas). They use Juba to be their source of hiding weapoms because they beleive that they are only people with voice over others. But no, just people can ignore you for your arrogance and madness of looking at each other as an enemy. If we the genuine people are leaving the government of South into the hands of jungle creature, i suggest that it is unwise move. Kind of hot threat to the future of south instead of their single mad community.

To me, it is visionless for us to be ruled by someone who knows how to drink milk and deserving barbaric art, actually it is true that the whole dinkas people are too behind to learnt the modern attitude. Their madness which is now been increased by guns is one of the worse thing in their future, maybe they will finish themselves before the arabs will occupy their land. You junglese why don’t you really understand yourselves, see some of you are starving in Khartoum carrying water to earn a living and now peace is coming to yourselves in your own home, yet your going crazy (importing guns) with your ugly beliefs. Am sorry i don’t even think of advicing you, because I knew that telling you that truth is just like asking you to sit on a needle. But for your own safety, you should be acting like a normal creature or copy from others, you have roamed in Equatoria for years, but still you going with nothing unless sticking in the peaceful areas (Equatoria). Big Shame

That is damn business, you see, this is why fighting will never come to an end in Lake State.Lakes State is the most dangerous state in fear of terror. This is the result of loose government regulations, I mean government of lakes State is favoring lakes State citizens by allowing them to exercise their own thoughts i.e.In Lakes State, the hierarchy of government and citizens, is citizens first then government the second.

How can the government leave such deadly business to be operated in the state? Let us wait and see what wil happen to that guns dealer.

congretulation Mr:Agok Manyiel for apprehending such a great criminal selling aguns that has made atruck of rampant killing since 2005 up todate in Lakes State.the government of Lakes has been in so doing of keeping things down by puting citzen first than government but that will be from dusk to the dawn in lakes,so let’s the government be a government of much concern with civilian affairs and less bureaucracy in doing.the gun dealer must to get his reward of disobedience.

    Dear pals

    Who are they?
The article above highlight a gun dealer being restrained in Lkaes State. From my point of view, these gun dealers are not far away from government officials startig from military personnel to civil government.
wealth seekers love money or cows instate of human beings lives. What can it do to you that wealth you are getting out of selling the guns so that people kill themselves? who do you share it with when people get finished?
I gree with people like Gatwech who said Juba to be the source of supplying guns to dealers and from dealers to citizens. Army cammanders and politicians are part and parcel of this havoc.

Most of these arms came from army defectors who escapes with their guns and sold them at a highest costs as 1500 SP,other come through Wau road as a FOOD SUPPLY from NCP-NORTHEN SUDAN with a goal of distabilising Southern Sudan people and it GOSS,others do comes from businessmen who resorts to arms buying and selling because its had become a profitables business and other mode like stealing cows of those whom the believe dont search for their cattles incase it got lost and urbanisers. I hope our GOSS must do something to address these issues with a mediate effects.
