Lakes state governor denies rumours over return of ex-minister

By Manyang Mayom

February 21, 2009 (WAU) – The Governor of Lakes State, Lt. Gen. Daniel Awet Akot, today denied rumours that he would reinstate the ousted finance minister, who arrived recently in Rumbek.

Daniel_Awet_Akot1.jpgPhilip Marol Mading was the minister of finance until removed on December 14 on the orders of Salva Kiir Mayardit, the chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM). The SPLM chairman issued the order as part of an effort to break a deadlock in the state parliament.

Mading had been impeached by the Lakes state parliament in August 2007 on allegations of mismanagement of public funds, but nevertheless remained in office. Assembly members’ renewed efforts to remove him the following year, led by former Speaker Isaiah Machinkok, prompted a crisis in the parliament during which Machinkok himself was temporarily removed by a rival group of MPs.

No new minister has yet been appointed to replace Mading, who was reported to have travelled to Nairobi. Currently, the Minister for Physical Infrastructure, Jok Ayom Majak, is serving as the acting minister of finance.

Rumours began when the governor and ex-minister shared the same flight from back to Rumbek from Juba, where the governor had been answering summons from the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly.

But in a radio address today, the governor denied that Mading had returned to Rumbek with the intention of taking up his old position; yet he did not say why the official has returned.

At a closed-doors meeting of the SPLM Lakes State Secretariat held today, a few members in the Secretariat body were trying to reinstate Mading but the governor refused to do so, according to a source who attended the meeting. The governor has distanced himself from the position of those members pushing for his reinstatement, said the source.

    Excellent Move!Keep it up Governor!

How can one reinstate the ousted Minister who was earlier accused of corruption, misused of public property and utility.

I think those ministers seconding him are beneficiaries of his corruption whose primary objective is to bring him in order to continue misusing State resources and income.

Keep on refusing Governor, otherwise you will be part and parcel of the corruption.

The currant political mixes and corruptions in the state of Lake is fuelled by mismanagement supported by Mr. Awet who himself believed by many southern Sudanese as the man behind destabilisation of Lakes state due to his fail administration. He is the most corrupt to be removed from his position, otherwise Lakes will not see any progress rather then killing among the tribes and communities. President Kiir had fail to notice this kind of person and keep imposing him to the people of lakes.

Thank you Daniel Awet Akot for your brilliant moved having distant yourself from reinstating the corrupt minister who mess public funds as personal to resumed his portfoli and infact that is the most impressive thing you have made in your life and in your government. We the citizens of lakes state knew philip Marol to have been in the prison not in Nairobi to enjoy the stolen money.
Mr. Governor or i am sorry to called you so but i don’t have any other title to honor you because you haven’t read enough to acquire a prfessional title apart from being called “general or mr”. There is a little matter to discuss about your appointment of Mr. Jok Ayom as a caretaker in the ministry of finance was not the will of lakes state people and the idea of making him minister was frustrating.
If i were you Daniel Awet, i would abandon the position of governorship because you are too old to hold that position, you,d better go to cattle camp or open yourself a shop to run a business and live all these nonesence becuase you are not longer bookish to lead people.
