Criminal aliens accused of settling scores in South Sudan

By James Gatdet Dak

March 8, 2009 (JUBA) – Criminal aliens residing in Southern Sudan are accused of being behind some criminal activities including tortures and murders against their fellow respective citizens.

The Government of Southern Sudan has expressed concern over the increasing criminal activities targeting foreign residents in some major towns of the semi-autonomous region.

Minister for Regional Cooperation, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, presented to the Council of Ministers’ meeting on Friday a number of complaints he received from the two neighboring countries of Uganda and Kenya on the alleged tortures or murders by criminals targeting their citizens living in Southern Sudan.

However, according to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Paul Mayom Akech, many evidences indicate that criminals coming from some of the neighboring countries are the ones targeting themselves.

He said, for example, many investigated criminal cases that include murders involving Ugandans in Juba town were committed against the victims by their fellow Ugandans in the town.

Thousands of Ugandan citizens are believed to be residing in Juba and other major towns looking for economic opportunities.

The Government also acknowledged that some criminal activities are being perpetrated by Sudanese. An example cited was when some individuals lured a truck driver from Uganda under rental agreement to ferry their goods from Kampala across the border up to Bor County in Jonglei state only to murder him upon arrival in the County and took his truck.

The culprits, unfortunately, were reported to have escaped from the police custody after they were arrested. But the police officer who was on duty at the time of the escape was reportedly arrested for allegedly allowing the murderers to get away.

Law enforcement agencies were also directed to expose to the public the background of criminals, particularly their nationalities, and to work hard to reduce the level of the growing crimes in the region.

Our neighbouring countries should make sure first that they are clean before they point their fingers out to south ,while Kenya and Uganda are most countries in region well known for crime , People of south Sudan have nothing to do for killing or torturing innocent people whose came from their home countries to look for better life in south Sudan .

If Kenya and Uganda authorities don’t like the situation their citizens live in south, let call them back for better security and leave Sudanese a lone with their own insecurity.
