Sudan’s Kiir to visit Japan on Monday

March 8, 2009 (TOKYO) — The Sudanese Vice-President and head of southern Sudan government, Salva Kiir mayardit will start a four day visit to Japan tomorrow, the Japanese foreign ministry said.

During his visit, Kiir will meet the Japanese Prime Minister, Taro Aso, and will hold talks with the foreign minister Hirofumi Nakasone. He will meet also officials from the defense ministry and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Tokyo has been involved, after the signing of the CPA in January 2005, in the funding of several projects for development and DDR in southern Sudan. Earlier in January this year Japan granted $17 million for a disarmament and reintegration programme in the southern Sudan. Last year Japan paid $8.7 million for the construction of a Teacher Training Institute (TTI) in Juba. Previously the JICA financed the construction of the Juba River Port which $2.5 million.

The Vice President also will take part in a symposium on Japan’s efforts to promote peace and security in Africa.

The Japan participates currently with 2 officers in the UN mission in Sudan (UNMIS). Last year Tokyo, had considered sending engineering peacekeepers to participate in road construction and mine-removing in southern Sudan roads. But the idea was dropped due to the shaky security situation there.

Hey, President Kiir, you better watch out for you life and well being of Southern Sudan right now. You need to stop traveling during this ICC warrant upon Omar because you need to be down there on the ground, especially when the expected or unexpected happened. You never really know what every minute or second will bring. Remember that we will not afford another air disaster at this time. I hope you will hear this piece of advise.
