ASMARA, March 29, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The deputy secretary-general of the Sudanese People’s Congress party, Dr Ali al-Haj, said, in a telephone interview with Eritrean Television, that Sudanese security agents are detaining a number of opposition leaders under the pretext of plotting to overthrow the government of Sudan. He further stated that these acts of detention and hunt are continuing.
Ali al-Haj further stated that the Sudanese government is resorting to this move amid the current tension it is facing in Darfur region, the setbacks it is encountering at the peace talks in Naivasha and the growing popular opposition inside the country.
He pointed out that the people against whom the Sudanese government is taking the aforementioned measures under allegations that they are inciting tribalism are in fact natives of Darfur and Kordufan.
