Sudan president cancels Ethiopia trip, press conference and a rally

March 10, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — A planned trip by the Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir to Ethiopia today, for the annual supreme joint committee meeting has been cancelled for unknown reasons.

The pro-government Sudanese Media Center (SMC) website reported that the committee will convene on April 11th in the Ethiopian capital without referring to the meeting that was scheduled for today.

Last month Sudan official news agency (SUNA) reported that Al-Bashir will be leading the Sudanese delegation to Ethiopia on March 10th for the annual supreme joint committee meeting co-chaired by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

On February 25th the Sudanese defense Minister Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein flew to Ethiopia where he discussed preparations for the joint committee meeting.

However following the March 4th decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Bashir, Khartoum did not confirm or mention the scheduled meeting.

Ethiopia is not a member of the ICC’s Rome Statute and is therefore under no legal obligation to arrest Bashir.

Last week the Ethiopian Communications Minister Bereket Simon said that his country would “absolutely” ignore the warrant if Bashir visited.

Separately a press conference by Bashir was abruptly cancelled thirty minutes before it was scheduled to take place without explanation.

A journalist in Khartoum told Sudan Tribune that the External Media commission invited media organizations for the press conference at 10 am before calling it off.

Furthermore Sudan official news Agency (SUNA) reported that a rally to be attended by Bashir and volunteer organizations will be rescheduled from Wednesday March 11th to Sunday March 15th.

The organizations were to hand Bashir a letter of commitment to cover the gap in humanitarian work, SUNA reported.

Sudan has targeted 13 foreign and three local aid groups saying they collaborated with the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The UN humanitarian chief John Holmes told reporters on Monday that the Sudanese government lacks sufficient capacity to do the work of the aid groups it has ordered out.

Whether this cancellation is related to ICC’s verdict or not, it honor ICC’s influence all the more. The other week, he (Bashir) said that ICC and the West are under his foot, i am beginning to wonder about who will really submit to whose feet.

Mr. Bashire you mean that staying in Sudan will be the options. Ha,ha,ha and Waw to the talkative man. Did I hear that the ICC is at your feet, that they will either soke their indictment in water and drink it.
It is here clear that someone will soke his threats in water and drink it.

Bravo, bravo the ICC for making Bashire to drag his feet on visit to foreign soils. It is now clear to you that nobody will condone you outside Sudan. Many Sudanese will be very happy at the day you are caught and forwarded to the court. Mr. Al Bashire if you mean what you say why do you postphone the trip to Ethiopia for the summit, we Sudanese don’t want to be fool by people like you. God that created human being in his image and likeness will be our witness to whatever can be happening to us sponsored by your greedy government.

We will be monitoring your movement till God hands you to the court to answer the atrocities your government had committed on this soil of Sudan. May the Name of God be praise forever and ever.

I think Bashir is a coward at heart. He can rape, murder, and torture easily enough, but as soon as his actions begin to turn against him, what does he do?
    He hides out at home.

WoW.Mr Bashir said recently that he was a only man so where have you hide your testes now for redressing anytime when you fills like reclaiming your manhood?why do you fail to turn-up in a conference if you were a courageous individual? Farthurmore you`re the one who had shaked your impunity and crimes with water and then drunk but not the ICC anymore. I dont know whom to blames,Sudanese poeple(me included)who allows such a impotent man who have no kids amongst sudanese to rule their country or the international comunity who gives such a man a recognisions for that long, Bashir impotency must be taken serious as an example of our country to avoids repeating such a error for sudanese in future ……
