Two gunmen carjack UNAMID vehicle in South Darfur capital

March 18, 2009 (EL-FASHER) – Two gunmen carjacked a vehicle of the hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur, the UNAMID reported on Wednesday.

The vehicle was carjacked in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state at 7:25 am local time. The peacekeeping mission said the carjackers were in “military uniforms”, an indication that could lead to believe they are members of government militias.

“No injuries were reported” said the UNAMID daily media briefing.

The mission immediately reported the carjacking to the Sudanese Police. UN Department of Safety & Security (UNDSS) officials and UNAMID Military Police are closely monitoring the situation.

On Tuesday March 17, a peacekeeper has been killed near Nyala during an attack against a six member patrol of the hybrid peacekeeping force. The blue helmets were returning to their base in Nyala, after conducting an escort patrol.

UNAMID security officers also reported that on 16 March, two UNAMID national staff members were harassed and beaten by five armed men dressed in civilian clothes in El Geneina, West Darfur.

The two staff members were stopped while they were driving a UN vehicle, beaten and left by the attackers. The incident was reported to the Government of Sudan Police.
